Letter to Editor: Thank you for RELAY FOR LIFE fundraising support!

Medfield Resident (and Patch contributor) Colleen Sullivan reflects on her 10th American Cancer Society Relay For Life.

Dear Editor, Having recently completed my 10th Relay For Life event, I am pleased and honored to thank my many Medfield friends, family members and everyone who once again supported my fundraising efforts for the American Cancer Society.  I am also very proud to be one of the top three individual fundraisers at this year’s 2012 event; an event that I am passionate about and dedicated to. In 2003, the first year the American Cancer Society brought this event to Medfield, I was intrigued as I had never heard of the Relay For Life so I went to an informational meeting.  Today, as I write this letter of thanks after my 10th RELAY event, it is obvious that I not only joined up, I jumped in with both feet! Check out these photos from the 10th annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life event held at the Medway Middle School last weekend.

MEDWAY – The weather was great, the event was fun, and the fundraising went on through the night – The Relay for Life of Medfield/Millis/Medway/Norfolk was a huge success.  Those in purple shirts represent being cancer survivors and each year the survivors are honored by taking the very first lap around the track and then invited into a dinner reception and this year was no exception.  In addition to walking the first lap, however, this year, each survivor was given a balloon and they were asked to let it go just before walking that first lap ... letting go of the balloon signified letting go of cancer.  Many youth and adult teams of volunteers set up camp, and walked the track throughout the night. Sullivan: A Decade's Worth of Memories of Medfield's Relay for Life

The Relay For Life 2012 event will be held on June 8 to 9 in Medway, marking a full decade of participation for Medfield.

As I think about the upcoming Relay for Life event on June 8 to 9, I reflect on the previous nine years.   Having served as a co-chair, publicity chair, team captain and team member, I am reminded of how much this event means to me, as well as how it has evolved.  Over the years quite a few changes have occurred both in location and town participation, but what hasn't changed are the memories of the people I got to know because of this event. I worked with and walked the track with some remarkable people whom I might never have encountered otherwise.  Some of these people took on key roles, others attended just to feel the outpouring of support that the Relay gave. Many were either battling cancer, celebrating having beaten it, or …
