PHOTOS: Peak House Opens for Season with Display of N STARR Sword from War of 1812

Antique sword used during the War of 1812 aboard the U.S.S. Constitution displayed at Peak House this past Sunday.

On Sunday afternoon, Richard DeSorgher and other members of the Medfield Historical Society set up a display case on the front lawn of the Peak House. An authentic N STARR sword which had been used during the War of 1812 aboard the U.S.S. Constitution (Old Ironsides) and a piece of the U.S.S. Constitution (removed during the 1974 restoration of the ship) were on display. In addition, visitors could view books about the history of the U.S.S. Constitution and the War of 1812.  The curators of the Medfield Historical Society also gave tours of the Peak House and its grounds.  This year marks the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812.

Peak House to Open for Season on Sunday

The Peak House will open for the summer season on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. with a tribute to the War of 1812, namely a sailor's sword that was used during the war aboard the U.S.S. Constitution and Old Ironsides.

On Sunday, June 24, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., the Peak House at 345 East Main Street will open for the season with special recognition of the War of 1812 (on its 200th anniversary) namely a sailor’s sword used during the war aboard the U.S.S. Constitution, also known as "Old Ironsides."   The sword has been in the possession of the Medfield Historical Society for more than 100 years, and will be on display on Sunday. The history of the U.S.S. Constitution with the general public who are invited to this event where Historical Society curators will be present and will give tours through Medfield's most famous building. The Peak House will be open every Sunday through mid-September, and each week will feature a special additional exhibit …

'East Main Street Historic District' Proposed in Medfield

Medfield's Historic District Commission and Historical Commission are again discussing an 'East Main Street Historic District' that would include the Peak House, Clark Tavern, and the Eliakim Morse House to start.

Medfield's Historic District Commission and Historical Commission are again discussing the possibility of an East Main Street Historic District that would include, at least, the Peak House (1711), Clark Tavern (1740) and Eliakim Morse House (1750) because the histories of all three structures are linked.  “About 10 years ago, maybe 2003, we started to explore the concept but we got a lot of opposition,” said Historic District Commission chairman Michael Taylor.  He said one of the homeowners was opposed to the idea in the past but, “we’ve been working behind the scenes trying to get that landowner to be supportive of the district.” Town historian Richard DeSorgher said some people stereotype and think a “historic district” designation …

Sculpture Path to Outline Medfield’s Cultural District

Medfield resident Jean Mineo is organizing a sculpture path from the Peak House to Vine Lake Cemetery that will likely appear in town by late spring.

Thanks to the efforts of Medfield resident Jean Mineo and a grant she received from the Medfield Cultural Council, a sculpture path will be returning to town this spring. “I think it will be really cool,” said Mineo. “We are hoping for installation [of the sculptures] in late spring and depending on materials, it could be up for the summer and maybe into September or it could be a shorter project. It’s not permanent but it would be an opportunity to get that conversation going [about] what the cultural opportunities are in Medfield.” Two years ago, Mineo organized a similar sculpture path at Vine Lake Cemetery. Medfield's Annual Pantry Sale at the Peak House Set for Nov. 19

Proceeds from the annual pantry sale are used to maintain and make necessary repairs to the historic house under the maintenance of the Medfield Historical Society.

On Nov. 19, the Saturday before Thanksgiving, Medfield residents are expected to line up outside the famous Peak House on Main Street to participate in the town's annual pantry sale, which opens at 10 a.m. The Annual Peak House Thanksgiving Day Sale is sponsored by the Medfield Historical Society. The Peak House is one of a kind and is one of the few surviving examples of post-medieval English architecture in the United States. It is the only free standing structure of its kind in America. Over 300 years ago, the house was built by Benjamin Clark and was used as a residence, workshop etc. until 1924, when it was deeded to the Historical Society.  Now, a national historic landmark, it is owned and maintained by the society and open on …
