Student Council Rep Says School Committee Experience was "Awesome"

Evan Berry, the MHS school committee representative and a member of the Class of 2012, thanked the School Committee for his time on the committee.

At his final school committee meeting last month, Student Council Representative (and Class of 2012 graduate) Evan Berry thanked the Medfield School Committee for the opportunity to serve on the board. “Being on the school committee has been awesome,” he told the committee at its June meeting.  “When you’re in Kindergarten, you don’t understand how much goes into your education, you just see what goes on in the classroom and, even now in high school, it’s such an interesting perspective to see really how special a place Medfield is,” he said. Norfolk DA Gives Medfield Schools Over $3K in Safety Grant Funds

Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrissey presented Medfield Public Schools $3,250 as part of a safety grant at Monday's School Committee meeting.

Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrissey acknowledged at Monday’s School Committee meeting it’s a challenge keeping children safe and rewarded Medfield Public Schools for its efforts to meet that challenge head-on. "[Medfield] is one of the biggest spending schools in [prevention and student safety programs]," Morrissey said. "I’m aware of the effort you make to keep your schools safe and I’m happy to participate in a small way." That small way totaled $3,250 in safety grant funds as Morrissey presented two checks to the Medfield School District to continue funding and expand its student safety programs and efforts. School Committee Agenda: A Visit from Norfolk County DA and Introduction of Wheelock Principal

The Medfield School Committee will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the TV Production classroom of the high school.

Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrissey is expected to visit the Medfield School Committee at Monday's meeting for a presentation. After Morrissey's presentation, Superintendent of Schools Bob Maguire is expected to introduce Donna Olson, the new principal at the Ralph Wheelock School to the committee. Maguire announced at the March 5 School Committee meeting the hiring of Olson, the current principal at Raymond C. LaPerche Elementary School in Smithfield, R.I. “She’s excited and ready to go,” Maguire told the committee at its March 5 meeting. State Reps ‘Cautiously Optimistic’ Budget Will Bring Good News to Medfield Schools

The Massachusetts House Ways and Means Committee is expected to announce its version of the FY13 state budget Wednesday, April 11 at the Statehouse.

In advance of Wednesday's state budget announcement by the Massachusetts House Ways and Means Committee, Senator James Timilty and State Representative Denise Garlick met with the Medfield School Committee Monday to discuss local aid and education funding. Medfield's representatives shared some encouraging news regarding Chapter 70 funding, Circuit Breaker funding for special education and the state's commitment to education, which has been evident in the Governor's proposed budget. "Senator [Timilty] and I are able to say we are cautiously optimistic Medfield is going to be level funded or more [in Chapter 70 funding]," Garlick said. Schools Roundup: School Committee Appoints Chair, New Dale Street School Principal and MHS Highlights

Here’s a roundup of school news and notes gathered from the Monday, April 9 School Committee meeting.

The first order of business for the School Committee Monday was naming a new chair to replace chairman Susan Ruzzo, who opted not to run for reelection after nine years of service on the board. Christopher Morrison, the committee’s recording secretary, nominated vice chair Debbie Noschese to be appointed chair, which was approved unanimously by the committee. “I accept,” Noschese said. “Thank you.” The committee also welcomed new member Maryanne Sullivan, who was voted into the position at the March 26 Town Election. “I want to welcome Maryanne Sullivan,” Noschese said. “Welcome aboard and we are glad to have you. Medfield Public Schools to Open After Labor Day Next Year

Medfield's first day of school for the 2012-2013 calendar year is Tuesday, Sept. 4.

Medfield students will enjoy a longer summer in 2012, as the first day of school won't be until after Labor Day, according to Superintendent of Schools Bob Maguire. "This is a late year," Maguire said of the 2012-2013 Medfield Public Schools Calendar. The calendar, which can be viewed in the PDF file in the photo gallery above, was approved by the School Committee at its March 19 meeting and shows the first day of school for Medfield students, grades 1 through 12, will be Tuesday, Sept. 4. Kindergarten opens on Sept. 10. Teachers will report to their classrooms on Wednesday, Aug. 29 and Thursday, April 30 before breaking for the holiday weekend. School Committee Agenda: State Reps Visit and Reorganization of Board

The Medfield School Committee will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the TV Production classroom of the high school.

Senator James Timilty and State Representatives Dan Winslow and Denise Garlick are expected to attend Monday's School Committee meeting at the request of Superintendent Bob Maguire and the committee to discuss the importance of the Circuit Breaker fund and other state funding issues/concerns. In February, Maguire expressed some concern regarding state funding via Governor Deval Patrick's budget.
