Medfield Garden Club Thanks Highway Department

The Medfield Garden Club thanks the Medfield Highway Department for helping beautify town streets.

To the Editor: As summer comes to a close and we head into autumn, the members Of The Medfield Garden Club  thought it would be  perfect time to acknowledge the efforts of Bobby Kennedy and the crew at the Medfield Highway Department. As many are aware, the Medfield Garden Club has a primary purpose to beautify the Town of Medfield and towards that goal, we maintain 21 sites around town with seasonal plantings  of flowers during spring, summer and fall. During the winter months, we fill the many pots around town with greens and decorate the Town Hall, Library and the Gazebo with roping and wreaths. Bobby and the crew at the Highway Dept provide the Club with much assistance during the year as we prepare, plant and water our sites. They …

Medfield Garden Club’s Annual Spring Plant Sale is Saturday

Garden Club’s annual plant sale keeps Medfield blooming.

The Medfield Garden Club’s annual Spring Plant Sale – a town tradition that is now nearly four decades old – will be held Saturday, May 19 at the Unitarian Church on North Street. The perennials at this year’s plant sale “are terrific and attractively priced,” according to Medfield Garden Club organizers. “[However], the best part about supporting the sale is that the proceeds get plowed directly into those colorful planters and islands all around town, according to the garden club. The annual spring sale is one of two Medfield Garden Club fundraisers held during the year and it’s the proceeds from the sale that allow the club to maintain nearly 20 roadside gardens all around town. The sale is this Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the …

At its Feb. 7 meeting, members of the club prepared 20 mini Valentine's Day arrangements for the seniors in town who receive Meals on Wheels delivered to their homes. "This is part of the ongoing programs we have designed to bring cheer to the seniors in town, some of whom are at home, and others who are at The Thomas Upham House," said Nancy Tella, president of the Medfield Garden Club. Peterson: Old Photographs Inspire a Desire for More Street Trees in Town

Medfield Board of Selectmen chair Osler "Pete" Peterson recently posted on his blog, Medfield 02052, that he would like to see the Town of Medfield engage in a planned program to plant more street trees throughout town.

I would like to see the Town of Medfield engage in a planned program to plant more street trees. I am motivated by the old photographs I have seen of the tunnels of the tree canopies formed by the towering elm trees along Main Street and the full Willow trees along Rte. 109 where it crosses the Charles River. There are hybrid Elm trees that are resistant to the Dutch Elm Blight, so we could return to Elms. The ornamental pear trees do well as street trees and might work well in the downtown.  Where Chestnut trees were once such a common New England hardwood, it might be nice to see if there is a Chestnut tree now that can both survive and prosper. The Willows could look spectacular along the river crossing. Given our town budget issues, I …

Discovering Medfield

Knapp: Discovering the Medfield Garden Club

This multi-generational group of 61 active members (and 10 honorary members) sees it as their mission to beautify their town – and they’ve been doing so since 1933.

Medfield is a beautiful place to live in great part due to the Medfield Garden Club.  This multi-generational group of 61 active members (and 10 honorary members) sees it as their mission to beautify their town – and they’ve been doing so since 1933.  If you’ve noticed planted gardens at the major entrances to town, island gardens intersecting roadways, or perhaps a container garden at the end of your street – it is likely provided, planted and maintained by the volunteers of the Medfield Garden Club. What a welcoming feeling you get when you see those pansies, mums, holiday greens and bows, and winter adornment on the town gazebo, etc. on the streets of Medfield.   Club President Nancy Tella said the group tries to make the seasonal …

The award is given each year for volunteer work both inside and outside the garden club world. Sanders, who is a past president of the Medfield Garden Club, was cited as ‘the consummate volunteer’ whose work encompasses both horticulture and broader social needs.   In Medfield, she is well known for having run a program to get residents to compost kitchen and yard waste, and more than 600 Medfield residents have made the trek to her driveway on Wild Holly Lane to pick up the black bins.  For the Medfield …
