The nomination papers deadline for the U.S. Senate race is Wednesday, Feb. 27.
With only a few days until nomination papers are due in the race for U.S. Senate, last week was a busy one for announced and potential candidates looking to fill the seat left vacant by John Kerry’s appointment to Secretary of State. The Republican field lost one prominent candidate, and another generated controversy. On the Democratic side, Congressmen Edward Markey, D-Malden, and Stephen Lynch, D-South Boston, have been working through their pre-primary debate schedule and campaigning across the state. It’s starting to shape up into quite a race, as the field of potential Republican candidates for U.S. Senate continues to grow. This week, two more Republicans threw their hats in the proverbial ring in the race for the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by the appointment of John Kerry to Secretary of State including Norfolk’s Sean Bielat (who ran for the 4th Congressional District Seat in November against Joseph P. Kennedy, III) and Cohasset’s Gabriel Gomez. Candidates have just under two weeks to meet the Feb. 27 deadline to gather the 10,000 certified signatures needed to appear on the April 30 primary ballot. The special election is June 25. State Rep. Dan Winslow officially in race for the Senate seat vacated by John Kerry.
UPDATE: Feb. 7 at 6:30 p.m. -- State Rep. Dan Winslow tells Fox25 Boston he is officially in the race for the Senate seat vacated by John Kerry last week. Winslow, who represents the Ninth Norfolk District which includes Medfield, is the first Republican to join the race. "I'm in this to win this; I'm going to give this race everything I have with everything I've got," he said, noting he will use $100,000 of his own money and raise the needed $4 to $6 million to win the race. While Congressman Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) isn’t expected to make a formal announcement until later this afternoon, a new Stephen Lynch for Senate Facebook page popped up this morning with a link to a “Stephen Lynch for US Senate Announcement” YouTube video that announces Lynch’s Senate candidacy. Earlier in the morning, the Stephen Lynch for Congress Facebook page had posted a message directing people to the newly created Senate page for news “on today’s plans and schedule.” Lynch is expected to make an announcement at 4 p.m. this afternoon at the Ironworkers Local 7 Hall in South Boston. With Tuesday's official nomination of U.S. Senator John Kerry to the post of Secretary of State, the field is opening up with folks vying for Kerry's seat in the U.S. Senate. But before that even happens, an interim senator has to be named. On Wednesday, Gov. Deval Patrick announced his former chief of staff William “Mo” Cowan will be the interim senator and will serve until a new senator is elected in the June 25 special election. Patch reported in December that Cowan, a Stoughton resident, would be stepping down and returning to the private sector. After President Obama’s selection of John Kerry as Secretary of State, there’s a lot of interest in the senior senator’s seat.
With U.S. Senator John Kerry as President Barack Obama’s pick for Secretary of State, it’s anyone’s guess who will run for the seat in a special election next summer. Kerry was nominated by Obama on Dec. 21. If Kerry is appointed, Governor Deval Patrick will appoint an interim senator, who will be named to the position before the special election. On Friday, President Obama nominated Senator Kerry as his choice for Secretary of State.
Massachusetts Senator John Kerry, who currently chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has been nominated for Secretary of State by President Obama. During the nomination, President Obama credited Kerry, 69, with "having played a 'central role' in foreign policy debates for the past three decades, including ratification of the START nuclear treaty with Russia," according to abcnews.com. Kerry was first elected to the Senate in 1984, and re-elected in 1990, 1996 and 2002, according to Biography.com. He ran for president in 2004 against George W. Bush, and lost. The Washington Post is reporting that President Obama is considering appointing Massachusetts U.S. Sen. John Kerry as the Secretary of Defense. There was speculation Kerry would be the next Secretary of State. Kerry's move would open up his current seat. Should he be appointed, a special election would be held to finish out Kerry's term, which expires in 2014.
