Home Sales for the Love of Rescued Animals

A Weston real estate pair fell in love with a badly injured pit bull mix, and they're selling homes to support the organization that saved her.

Three years ago Weston real estate agent Leslie Mann read a story on the Internet that horrified her. What she read was the story of Turtle, a female pit bull-type dog who had been abandoned in a wooded area of Hyde Park in the middle of winter. She was badly injured and barely clinging to life -- showing all the signs of a bait dog, one used to test the fighting instinct of a potential fight dog. The Animal Rescue League of Boston stepped in to help Turtle -- she was found near Turtle Pond Parkway -- nursing her back to health through six months of treatment at Tufts Veterinary Hospital in Walpole. "I was just horrified by [the story] and said, 'We have to do something for her,'" Mann said. At the time, she held a Spin class fundraiser …

Medfield Girls Hockey End Season in Heartbreaking Fashion in Shootout Loss to Walpole

The Warriors ended their season 10-8-3.

The Medfield girls varsity hockey team ended their season in heartbreaking fashion Wednesday night in the Preliminary Round of the MIAA DII Tournament. The Warriors lost, 2-1, in a shootout after Medfield's senior goalie Mimi Borkan stoned the Rebels throughout most of the game. “It was a heart attack,” said Rebels head coach Joe Verberder. “When you run into a goalie, in playoff time goalies can steal the show and she almost did. She was phenomenal. She was lights out.” Walpole attacked the net throughout the game only to be turned away time and again. Verberder said they tallied over 50 saves made by Borkan during the game. The only two to trickle past were by junior defensemen Jennafer Donahue, including the game winner. “We threw all …

Medfield Girls' Basketball Over Oliver Ames in Walpole Tourney

Medfield over Easton in Walpole Tourney Championship.

The following ran in the Easton Patch on Feb. 21, 2013. The Oliver Ames girls' basketball team went into Wednesday night's Walpole Tournament championship game facing one final test before the Massachusetts State Tournament. They were certainly tested in more ways than one. A scrappy and relentless Medfield squad stood in the way of Oliver Ames heading into the state tournament unbeaten. The Warriors won the back-and-forth game, 61-55. The Tigers dropped to 18-1 overall. "It’s really too bad that somebody had to lose this game," Oliver Ames coach Elaine Clement-Holbrook said. "That’s just the way it goes. It’s not one of those things where everyone gets a trophy and everyone is smiling." The game was a rematch of last year's Walpole …

One PIN pad device was tampered with in each of three stores in Massachusetts including Walpole and Chestnut Hill.

Hackers have stolen credit card information from more than 60 Barnes and Noble stores, including three stores in Massachusetts, according to Barnes and Noble officials.  One PIN pad device was tampered with at each of the stores in Walpole, Chestnut Hill, and Hingham, according to Barnes & Noble. Barnes & Noble said: Barnes & Noble has completed an internal investigation that involved the inspection and validation of every PIN pad in every store. The tampering, which affected fewer than 1% of PIN pads in Barnes & Noble stores, was a sophisticated criminal effort to steal credit card information, debit card information, and debit card PIN numbers from customers who swiped their cards through PIN pads when they made purchases. Sharon Country Day Camp Continues Straddling Two Worlds

Summer camp on Sharon-Walpole line began Monday.

Although the Sharon Country Day Camp began during the early 1960s, some new visitors were unsure where they were this spring. “When parents come down here that are coming down for the first time, one of their first reactions when they see all these cabins and so forth (is), ‘Is this an overnight camp? Is this a residential camp?’” Camp Director Charlie Hershman said during a recent interview. “We have to explain to them that physically, we’re very much like an overnight, residential camp. Except our day starts at 8:30 a.m. and winds up at 4 p.m.” Camp opened Monday at Sharon Country Day, at 691 Common St., Walpole, off Route 1 on the Sharon line. More than 200 kids ages 4 to 14 are expected to participate over the eight-week season, which …
