The business is closing on Thursday.
There are just a few days left to purchase Lord's t-shirts and mugs (due to arrive shortly) before Lord's Department Store closes for good later this week. Though the store will close its doors one last time on Feb. 28, store owners Nancy Kelly-Lavin and Tom Kelly expect merchandise to be gone before that time. The doors will likely close to the public on Wednesday, if not before. Be sure to stop by soon, if you need a souvenir t-shirt or mug (or one final walk around the store). Be sure to record your favorite stories in the memory book or in an audiovisual recording at Friday's party. They will be kept by the Kelly family and the Medfield Historical Society.
Okay, Medfield, there's not much time left so here's my favorite memory of Lord's Department Store. After you read mine, I'd love to read yours! Make sure you record your memory either in person at Friday's party, on Facebook at Medfield Remembers Lord's, or in the comment section of this story -- whichever way you choose, be sure to do it soon as the store will be closing two weeks from today. Here goes... This past Christmas, my 13-year-old son headed to Lord's to buy that one last gift on his shopping list -- mine. I sent him fully-prepared with a detailed list of various options as well as their exact location in the store. He had $20 to spend. After the holidays, he would relay the details of that day... Minutes after school let …

Store owners have created a memory book where customers have started to write down their favorite Lord's memory including one little girl whose dream it is that the owners will change their minds and keep the store open.
The memory binder at the front of Lord's Department Store is chuck full of memories from people who have loved the store over the years -- people who are grieving the loss of their beloved Lord's while doing what they can to preserve its good name. Customers, both young and old, near and far (many by email), are included in the book. Here are a few examples: I remember coming here on bike at age nine to get the Boston Globe for my aunt and parents. I remember buying my mother a necklace for Mother's Day when there was a jewelry counter. I remember riding my bike here to get my mother a spool of thread or a zipper when she was in the middle of a sewing project. If you need something, most likely you could find it at Lord's. We will miss…

Lord's has received hundreds of pre-orders for its commemorative t-shirt.
Updated: Jan. 22, 2013 -- More than 1,000 commemorative t-shirts have been ordered but orders are still being taken. If interested, fill out an order sheet at Lord's Department Store (which will be closing on Feb. 28 after 73 years in business) or call 508-359-2361. Original story: Jan. 15, 2013 -- The response to the Lord's commemorative t-shirt has been unbelievable, says Nancy Kelly-Lavin who co-owns Lord's Department Store with her brother, Tom Kelly. "The response has been amazing," said Kelly-Lavin. "We're getting calls from all over -- from New Mexico and even London. I've gotten emails from Colorado and Florida, it's incredible. I definitely didn't order enough." Soon after the community learned the family-run Lord's Department…

After Lord's closes on Feb. 28, everyone wants to know, "Who's moving in?"
When people heard that Lord's Department Store is closing after 73 years in business, the first question (often accompanied by a sorrowful look) was, "Why?" The second question was inevitably, "Who's moving in?" Nancy Kelly-Lavin, who runs Lord's with her brother Tom Kelly, said they don't know who the next tenant might be and the developer might not either. "I don't have a clue, nor does my brother," said Kelly-Lavin." We don't think they have anything lined up. They just said this was a premium spot." "We tried to control it at the beginning," she said about who might next occupy the space, "but it's a developer, we can't." On Dec. 31, the building was sold to a local developer believed to be Salvatore Capital Partners, LLC and GJS …

Owners say everything must go.
And so it begins... The retirement sale at Lord's Department Store starts today. After 73 years in downtown Medfield, Lord's will close its doors on Feb. 28. "We're going to start a store closing or retirement sale and just start to liquidate everything in the store, the fixtures and everything," said Nancy Kelly-Lavin who runs the store with her brother Tom Kelly. Store hours have been cut back to 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Also this week, patrons can pre-order t-shirts which are being sold to commemorate the store's longevity; and they can write down a special Lord's memory in the memory book/book at the front of the store. People have started to record their memories at Lord's Department Store. What's your favorite Lord's memory?
The owners of Lord's Department Store have started a memory book in which patrons can preserve their memories of the iconic store that will close its doors on Feb. 28. The store, which was founded in 1940 by Raymond Lord then taken over by Bill Kelly in 1981, was sold on Dec. 31. People have started to fill the binder with memories and some of those memories are posted on the store's large front windows, like this one: Dear Lord's, I bought my baseball card collection from you -- one pack at a time. Stale gum included. All of my school projects were made with your markers and posterboard, and my friends and I always stopped off for a candy bar on half days. Thanks for the memories!
