A Treasure Hunt in Medfield Through Letterboxing [VIDEO]

If you’re not familiar with Letterboxing (and many aren’t), it’s a type of treasure hunt that people are doing all over the world, even in Medfield.

Letterboxing is a fun way to get children out and about this summer (and all year round) and can even expose you to parts of town that you hadn’t noticed before. If you’re not familiar with the phenomenon (and many aren’t), it’s a type of treasure hunt and people are doing it all over the world, even in Medfield.  Letterboxing.org describes it as “an intriguing pastime combining navigational skills and rubber stamp artistry in a charming ‘treasure hunt’ style outdoor quest. A wide variety of adventures can be found to suit all ages and experience levels.” To get started, visit http://letterboxing.org/ then click “Log In” where you will register to become a member.  Next, choose the “Letterboxes” tab at the top, then “Search Clues,” and …

Discovering Medfield

Traveling Back in Time on a Historic Trolley Tour

Theresa Knapp took a trolley tour of Medfield's history as part of MEMO's Discover Medfield History Day this spring.

What better way to discover Medfield than to take the annual “Discover Medfield History Day” trolley tour, which I did this year and my head has been reeling ever since. The annual trek into Medfield’s past began in 1992 and is sponsored by MEMO, the Medfield Employers and Merchants Organization.  As always, Town Historian Richard DeSorgher entertained and enlightened hundreds of people throughout the day with historical facts and a bit of folklore. Many of the locations mentioned on the tour can be found on the “Medfield History DVD” available for $10 at Lord’s Department Store or the Medfield Historical Society. For a copy of the DVD or for more information, contact (508) 359-4773 or e-mail medfieldhistoricalsociety@gmail.com, or visit …

Medfield Resident John Poirier to Ride in this Weekend's Pan Mass Challenge

At least 55 Medfield residents will ride from Sturbridge or Wellesley to either Wellesley, Bourne or Provincetown in a massive effort to raise awareness and funds for cancer research.

When John Poirier’s father was 59 years old, he died of cancer. This weekend, Poirier, who is now 59 years old himself, will ride this year’s Pan Mass Challenge (Aug. 6 and 7) to raise money for the disease that took the life of his father and a sister.    “This will be my seventh year,” said Poirier, who lives in Medfield with his wife Carol Sandberg and daughters Allison and Anna. “My father died at his age 59 of cancer as did my sister at her age 52. I also have a sister who is a survivor. So, in large part, I ride in their memory and in respect to cancer patients and survivors I have come to know over the years. Having been blessed with good health myself, it seems like the least I can do.” Poirier said he has always been into …

McCarthy Anvil Memorial to be Dedicated on Medfield Day

Farrier Myron McLane has been working on a memorial for Robert McCarthy - retired farrier, mentor and close friend - who passed away in February, since March. The anvil memorial will be dedicated to McCarthy's memory on Medfield Day.

Retired farrier Robert O. McCarthy was a friend and mentor to many before his death in February at the age of 84. Myron McLane was one of those people. “Bob not only trained me in my trade but he trained me in life as well; he was my mentor for everything,” said McLane, 67 of Somerset, who was an apprentice for McCarthy for eight years (traveling daily to Medfield) starting in 1967.  “He was one of the finest men I ever knew," McLane said. "Truthfully, he was an unbelievable person.  He was very, very generous and he was always looking out for everybody else. … That’s the reason I want to have this memorial for him.” McLane is coordinating a monument that will be placed at the site of the former blacksmith shop on Janes Avenue, where …

Hinkley Swim Pond on Green Street: Five-year-old Jillian Gauch likes to swim – she has spent much of the summer doing “cannonballs” at town-owned Hinkley Swim Pond at 51 Green St.    “I like to swim fast.  I like all the docks.  I like to meet new friends,” said Jillian. Her mother, Michelle of Medfield, said she brings her three children (ages 5, 8 and 10) to the pond for swimming lessons and to play with other children. “The kids love it,” she said.  “There’s always someone to play with and it always seems to be clean.”  “We usually have at least 50 people on a regular day,” said director Michelle Pound. The main section of the pond is sloped with depths up to about six feet, said Pound.  The “deep end,” with marked lanes, runs between …

Patch Passport: A Hidden Gem on Main Street

Discover Butterfly Tree, a Hidden Gem on Main Street in Medfield that you may have driven by and never known existed. Take a little trip with Patch and we’ll show you the way.

Maria Piedra always wanted to open a unique gift shop and after battling breast cancer a few years ago, she decided to follow her dream. “When you’re faced with a disease like that, it really puts things in perspective.  Life is short and you should really live your dreams,” she said.  “I always liked the name ‘Butterfly Tree.’  Butterflies are all about transformation, and I was going through a bit of transformation. Butterflies are also beautiful and colorful and unique, and I was hoping to bring in a lot of those kinds of different products.”  The Norfolk resident knew the location at 505 Main St. in Medfield was the perfect place to launch her dream of selling fair trade, green, organic and repurposed gifts. She carefully selects each …

Shakespeare in the Park Returns to Medfield for 10th Year

The Gazebo Player's will bring to life Shakespeare's "Comedy of Errors" at the Medfield Gazebo Saturday, Sunday and July 28-29. Show begins at 5 p.m.

An extreme comedy of errors can be witnessed Saturday night (and three chances after that) as the Gazebo Players – now in its 10th year – bring to life Shakespeare’s story of "The Comedy of Errors," a farce involving two sets of identical twins and a seemingly endless stream of mistaken identities. Performances will be held on July 23, 24, 30 and 31 at 5 p.m. at the Gazebo near the Medfield Public Library. In case of rain, the show will go on at the Montrose School at 29 North St. Performances are free and open to the public. Picnics are encouraged and light refreshments will be available. "The Comedy of Errors" takes place during one single day in the ancient Greek city of Ephesus.  Aegeon,  a merchant from the city of Syracuse, arrives …

Discovering Medfield

Medfield on the Move ... to Exercise

Whether going solo, with a friend, with a stroller, or with a dog – folks are out and about enjoying the fresh air and getting some exercise around town.

Walking, jogging, running, bicycling – at all times of the day, you can see people taking advantage of Medfield’s sidewalk system and roadways designed to make manually maneuvering the town’s streets a pleasant (and green) experience. Whether going solo, with a friend, with a stroller, or with a dog – folks are out and about enjoying the fresh air and getting some exercise around town. While sidewalks see steady weekday traffic with children walking or bicycling safely to and from school, and families with strollers on their way to a friend’s house or the Children’s Room at the library – the weekend's roadways are really bustling. On any given Saturday – rain or shine (though only the die-hards come out in the rain) – you can expect to see…

For Fun of the Game: Kids, Adults Enjoy Pick-Up Soccer at Wheelock Fields [Video]

If you love playing soccer, stop by the fields behind the Ralph Wheelock Elementary School on Tuesdays for pick-up games beginning at 6 p.m.

Catherine Callahan loves to play soccer and thanks to some like-minded community organizers, she can join a weekly pick-up game all summer long. On July 5, Catherine, age 9, was one of 30 children – and adults – of all ages who stopped by the Ralph Wheelock Elementary School for a little summer soccer pick-me-up. “I thought it was really fun,” said Catherine, who has been playing soccer for several years. “I liked how we mixed up the teams. I just like playing soccer.” The program started last summer when families and children of all ages were invited to drop by with a soccer ball, water and bug spray for a few minutes or a few hours.  This year’s coordinator John Beaudoin said the program is not under any one person's or any entity's …
