The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Norfolk County, including Medfield, beginning Monday evening through Tuesday afternoon. The NWS is reporting a “significant winter storm” is likely to hit the area Monday night into Tuesday. The storm is expected to deliver a “period of heavy snow followed by sleet,” according to the NWS. Some areas will be hit with mostly freezing rain. In Medfield, snow accumulation of 4 to 8 inches is possible, along with a trace of ice. Snowfall will likely begin Monday evening before tapering off Tuesday afternoon with heaviest precipitation late Monday into Tuesday morning. “This will result in treacherous travel conditions later Monday night into at least Tuesday morning,” the NWS …

Friday, March 8 (snowstorm) 7:13 a.m., Preservation Way. Vehicle (1999 red Toyota) abandoned on Spring Street that was able to be moved onto Preservation Way. Was ticketed and towed. 7:22 a.m., Pine Street and Flint Locke. Caller reported a tree down. Fire Department moved tree to side of road. 8:20 a.m., Upham Road and Main Street. E911 caller said she was stuck in the snow at Upham Road and Main Street. At 8:22 a.m., she was on her way. 9:22 a.m., Granite Street. E911 caller said he was just in a car accident; minor damage, no injuries. Vehicles were a 2003 Honda Civic and a 2003 GMC pickup. 10:17 a.m., Main Street. Storm has passed but DPW needs full access to the roads to clean up.
Police Chief Robert Meaney Jr. says that drivers should stay off the roads "except for extraordinary situations that can't wait." The roads are still snow covered and vehicles are having difficulty with even slight grades, Meaney said. There are also large branches down around town that are partially blocking roads, and earlier today Pine Street was closed while NSTAR dealt with a downed wire. When the snow finally stops, the DPW will still need several hours to catch up with plowing and treating the roads. "The optimal situation for the various DPW [drivers] is to be able to clear the roads without competing with unnecessary traffic," Meaney said.

Medfield could get another 6 to 10 inches of snow.
UPDATED: 2/21/13 at 10pm Snow, snow, and, yes, more snow! Yet another snowstorm is headed our way this weekend, starting Saturday night and going into Sunday during which Medfield could see nearly a foot of new snow. On his blog, WHDH meteorologist Pete Bouchard says snow will start up on Saturday afternoon. "After midnight, the storm will get a little meatier. Snow intensity will increase into Sunday morning. Heavy snow through Sunday morning. Tapering to flurries by mid afternoon on Sunday," Bouchard writes. That could be bad news for folks coming home from February vacation. Do you agree with the governor's decision or was it too drastic?
All non-emergency drivers were ordered off the roads on Friday when Gov. Deval Patrick issued an executive order banning travel during the blizzard. (Editor's note: The ban is lifted statewide as of 4 p.m. Saturday.) Patrick's executive order is being praised by some and bashed by others, reported The Boston Globe. While former Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis, who was in charge of the commonwealth during the Blizzard of ’78, praised the governor’s move, others called the order “tyrannical” and say the strict ban and hefty fines were too much, according to The Globe. Updated: Jan. 21 at 9 p.m. Medfield can expect between three and five inches of accumulation during tonight's snowstorm, according to www.weather.gov. The weather forecast looks like this: A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Norfolk County for Monday night and Tuesday morning. According to weather.gov: * Impacts: Slick roadways and poor visibilities. With the light nature of snow, blowing and drifting of snow will be possible. The Tuesday morning rush hour across New England is expected to be impacted. * Winds: Southeast 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. * Temperatures: In the lower 20s. * Traffic: Motorists need to be especially careful on bridges and overpasses where slippery spots can easily develop.

People should use their common sense in situations like this--but there are always some who won't and will endanger others in the process. The ban was good in that respect, and the $500 fine certainly should have made folks think twice if they were hesitating over driving or staying home for no particular reason.
