Follow weekly columnist Theresa Knapp as she discovers all that Medfield has to offer.
I like snow. There, I said it. It’s true. I like snow. I like the first snowfall, the first snowman, the first snow day. I like the way it looks on treetops, rooftops, and picket fences. I like the way it turns any town into a scenic Winter Wonderland that inspires artists to set up their easels in freezing temperatures to capture its natural glory. I like the sound it makes under my feet. I like snow. Disclaimer: Before you think I’ve slipped on black ice and landed half-dazed in a snowbank, I should disclose that I grew up in Upstate New York and have a little history with the white stuff. When given the chance to move to San Diego or Boston, I chose Boston. I can’t help it. It’s in my genes. I like snow. So it will come as…

From playing in the snow to watching high school sports, there's plenty going on in the Medfield area this weekend.
Enjoy the Snow While many students got an early start to some fun in the snow due to the recent snow days, there's more than enough of the white stuff out there to go out and enjoy it. Head over to Medfield State Hospital for some weekend snow shoeing or cross-country skiing, or take a turn on the popular sledding hill across the street on Hospital Hill. Just be sure to bundle up and stay warm if you go out as the National Weather Service is calling for severe low temperatures. Attend A Medfield Library Event Take your children to the library each Saturday for games and crafts. Children of all ages are invited to stop by the activity room to participate in board games, puzzles and crafts from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Sunday, the library will …

Advice on keeping your kids safe and having fun while out sledding.
One benefit of living in a flood zone: Our house sits alongside a decent size slope perfect for winter sledding. The blizzard last month was a welcomed gift for my children. Once I stuffed them into their snowsuits and ran through the list of sledding rules, they proceeded to build ramps and additional slopes for maximum speed. I sat at the top of hill, teeth gritted, praying they reached the end in one piece. Winter brings many fun-filled activities (most involve sliding across frozen ground) but its best to review safety tips before heading outdoors. The American Association of Neurological Surgeons estimates that nationally, every year injuries from winter sports send thousands to emergency rooms. Roughly 22,870 people are injured each …

First snowfall brings adults and children out to Hospital Hill for some winter fun.
Now that the shoveling is done and the roads are clear, it is time to get out and enjoy the snow. The National Weather Service is reporting a very warm forecast this week, with temperatures expected to reach the mid to high-forties by week's end, it's perfect sledding weather. Parents, children, teenagers and adults took advantage of a sunny Tuesday and fresh powder on Hospital Hill – across the street from Medfield State Hospital – for some good old-fashioned winter fun – sledding. "There's nothing better than a sunny day and a snow covered hill," said a Medfield resident and father of two, who asked not to be mentioned by name out of fear of blowing his cover. "I'm playing hooky from work today," said the father with a laugh. "…

"Five Things you Need to Know Today" is a Patch column that provides readers with essential, daily information at a glance. Check back later for more, and let us know what you think of the new feature in the comments section.
