Kids Night Out This Friday

MPR will host a Kids Night Out on Friday, March 8, and another on March 15.

  Medfield Park & Rec's next Kids Night Out is Friday, March 8 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Pfaff Center. The $15 charge includes plain cheese pizza from Royal Pizza, juice box and water, cupcakes, and a movie leaving parents plenty of time for a quiet dinner out or some peace and quiet around the house! This week, we will be offering two movies: "Ice Age" for grades K-3, and "Hop" for grades 4-6. Movies are age-appropriate for both groups. Carrie Quinlan will be monitoring the K-3 group, while Monica Christo will be watching the 4-6 group. There will be another Kid's Night Out on Friday, March 15, the night before WInter Carnival.  MPR reps say that is the perfect event to drop your child off if you are volunteering at setup of Winter …

Selectmen Discuss Public Safety Budgets for Next Year

The Board of Selectmen met with the police chief and fire chief last week to discuss their proposed FY14 budgets.

New Police and Fire Station Discussed

Very preliminary estimates suggest the public safety complex could cost $15 million.

The Permanent Building Committee held the first of a series of public information sessions on Monday night to discuss the town's need for updated public safety facilities.The fire station was built in 1960 and the police department was built in 1977. Discussions are part of an overall long-range permanent building plan that would address town buildings in the North/Dale/Adams Streets area, including the town recreation center (at the Pfaff Center) and the Dale Street School (and the possibility of a new elementary school).  "We're in the data collection mode where we're just trying to learn what the needs are," said Bill Hammer of HKT Architects, noting the current police and fire stations are "old, they're inadequate, and they're not …

Uniquely Medfield: MYC, The Power of Youth

  When the “new” high school was built on 24 Pound Street and opened in 1961, the town closed the former Hannah Adams Pfaff School building on the corner of North and Dale Streets (today’s Pfaff Center). The building was first built in 1927 as Medfield High School, although it had many nicknames, including “The Laundry,” “Fort Apache,” and the “North Street School.” After its closure, it was used for storage for school supplies. It stayed that way until 1967.  In 1963, a group of high school students formed the Medfield Youth Center, which held Saturday night dances in the former hall on the second floor of town hall. Its first set of officers included Tony Frank, Calvin Fisher, Debbie Luke and Bob Souza. The Saturday night dances …

Still Tickets Available for Pfaff Halloween Party on Wednesday

You can still buy tickets on-line or at the door for the Oct. 24th event.

  The Medfield Parks and Recreation Department's annual Halloween party will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 24 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Pfaff Center. The cost is $10 per family, and pre-registration is suggested to guarantee a pumpkin for your little ghost or goblin. The event is recommended for ages 3 to 12 years old. Organizers say this is not a drop-off event. "Attendees get a pumpkin to decorate, can play the games we'll have (like pumpkin bowling, candy corn relay race and haunted musical chairs) as well as arts and crafts," said Program Coordinator Kevin Ryder. Medfield's Pfaff Center Gets ‘Fresh’ Look

The Medfield Parks and Recreation facility recently underwent renovations to improve and cleanup its interior look.

For the first time in nearly 40 years, the Medfield Recreation Department underwent renovations to its interior and Parks and Recreation Director James Snyder is pleased with the results (see photos). “Basically, for $8,500 we almost have a brand new building, which is relatively short money,” Snyder said. The public, according to Parks and Recreation Program Coordinator Kevin Snyder, is equally pleased with the new look of the Pfaff Center. “The look is great,” Ryder said. “A number of people that have come in have said it’s almost like a new building. It’s the little improvements that you can do that makes it more presentable and a better spot for people to bring their kids and families to the classes they take.” With no indication of a …

The School Your Child Attends in Medfield

The attached photos show Medfield’s five current school buildings during different stages of their history.

Medfield today divides its educational facilities into five school buildings; by order or their age: Hannah Adams Pfaff Elementary School (aka Dale Street School), Memorial School, Thomas A. Blake Middle School, Amos Clark Kingsbury High School and the Ralph Wheelock School. In 1940, Medfield had two school buildings; the Ralph Wheelock School located at 25 Pleasant St. and Medfield High School, now the Pfaff Center, on the corner of Dale and North Streets. In 1940, in the worst school fire ever to hit Medfield, the Ralph Wheelock School burned to the ground. The town had to move quickly and soon transferred all grades to the Hannah Adams Pfaff High School building on the corner of North and Dales Streets. Students attended in double …
