Medfield Runs for Sandy Hook Families

Medfield runners joined the nationwide virtual run for Sandy Hook.

On Saturday, approximately 30 runners joined others around the country in solidarity as part of a virtual run to support the families of the Sandy Hook tragedy. The race was first envisioned as a Danbury, Conn., area event to benefit the Sandy Hook School Support Fund. This fund, managed by the United Way of Western Connecticut and Newtown Savings Bank, directly supports the ongoing needs of the families affected by the tragic events in Newtown on Dec. 14, 2012. Shortly after the announcement of the race, response from the public was so overwhelming that the race had to be relocated to Hartford to accommodate all of those interested in participating. Stranger's '26 Acts' Gesture Makes Family's Morning

An anonymous person bought breakfast for people Friday at the Sunnyside Cafe in Marlborough, in an act of kindness seemingly inspired by the Newtown tragedy.

This happened at a diner in Marlborough. Have you ever been the recipient of a random act of kindness?  OUTSIDE BOSTON, MA -- A local woman was walking back to her table at a cafe Friday morning when she saw the looks on her family's faces. "When I sat down they were silent and showed me a note on a piece of paper. At first I thought it was a joke, but when I saw the note on another table, I knew it was real," said Julie Purcell, a Marlborough resident. The handwritten note (pictured with this article), left at Purcell's table at Sunnyside Cafe around 9:15 a.m., indicated that their breakfast was paid for: it was one of several a kind stranger requested servers leave at patrons' tables. The note read it was one of "26 acts," which is an …

If you are licensed to own a gun, would you want your name and address publicized?

A news publication in New York is under scrutiny for publishing the names and addresses of gun owners in certain parts of the state.   Less than two weeks after the tragic shooting in Newtown, Conn., the New York Journal News earlier this week published the names and addresses of local gun owners in three New York counties.   A story titled, "The gun owner next door: What you don't know about the weapons in your neighborhood," highlights the names and addresses of residents who are licensed to own handguns through Freedom of Information Law requests, according to The Huffington Post.  The Journal News reportedly requested the information from New York's Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties, though the publication was only able to …

Police Say Town Has Public Safety Plan In Case of School Tragedy

Medfield Police Chief says the town has a plan in place in case of a school tragedy. He also says a kind word can go a long way to stopping a series of events that could ultimately prove harmful.

The Town of Medfield has an emergency response plan in place if anything were to happen such as the tragedy that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., on Friday; however, when the community would be notified would depend on the situation. Medfield Chief of Police Robert E. Meaney Jr. said that, in a school emergency, he would work with the Fire Chief and the Superintendent of Schools to immediately respond to the emergency, and he would then have to wait for backup from surrounding communities before he could set up a command post and start disseminating information. "Medfield is a small place and I would be one of the first responders," said Meaney. "It's way I wear the uniform and carry all the equipment; it's …

Have You Talked With Your Child About the Shooting at Sandy Hook School?

Experts advise when talking about the shootings to take your lead from your child.

Today is the first day back to school, since the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. on Friday, Dec. 14, where 20 children and six adults were killed by a gunman.  The Medfield School District will take age-appropriate steps today to assure students that they are safe at school, and those children may have follow-up questions for their parents. Experts advise that parents follow the lead of their children—feel them out, find out what their concerns are—when talking about the incident. Dr. Joshua Weiner during an interview on msn.com said he had not told his school-aged children about the massacre in Connecticut until Sunday. "With elementary school children, you want to be brief and simple and not go into detail," …
