The popular program attracted 54 Kindergarten children last Saturday.

The popular Kinder Basketball League through the Medfield Parks & Recreation Department got off to a fast start Saturday morning, with 54 Kindergarteners on six teams participating in practices and games at the Memorial School gymnasium. Splashed in their team colors – red, orange, Kelly green, charcoal, royal blue and gold – the players were put through drills by the volunteer parent coaches, including passing, dribbling, defense and shooting. Once practice was over, each team participated in a game, where fun and learning the basic rules were emphasized. National Geographic on Thursday will begin airing "American Chainsaw," a show featuring local sculptor Jesse Green. His works include "Moose" and "Duck" at the Memorial School.
Jesse Green has made a living for 15 years carving tree trunks and stumps into whimsical characters and creatures like "Moose" and "Duck" at the Memorial School, "Casey at Bat" in Holliston, "Paul Bunyan," in Bellingham, "Mrs. Pine" in Milford. Now, his finesse with a chainsaw will put his creations in front of a national audience. National Geographic Television this week will begin airing "American Chainsaw," an eight-show series that focuses on Green, his crew and family in Medway. The first 30-minute episode airs at 10 p.m. Thursday, immediately followed by the second episode. (The reality show follows "Rocket City Rednecks.") Needham Bank has made a donation as part of MAP's Quest Capital Campaign. The Memorial School MAP site will undergo extensive repairs this summer.
Needham Bank is proud to announce its support of the Medfield Afterschool Program (MAP) by contributing $8,000 toward capital repairs to the program’s Memorial School site. Needham Bank has five branches throughout the greater Boston area, including one in Medfield. MAP is a parent-based non-profit after school program established to provide quality care to children in grades K-8 enrolled in Medfield Public schools. The program offers a variety of enrichment activities and services to more than 300 children annually at its four sites. A capital needs assessment has determined that the Memorial School site, located on North Street, is in need of extensive wall repair to counteract trapped water. At the end-of-the-year event last week, MAP students honored their teachers Meghan Jackson and Michael Ikoma for their many years with the enrichment program.
Last week, Medfield Afterschool Program students at the Memorial School and the Pfaff Center recognized two MAP teachers, who are celebrating anniversaries this year, by hand-crafting signs featuring Roman numerals. Michael Ikoma, the site director of the fourth and fifth grade enrichment program held at the Pfaff Center for Dale Street School students, marked 10 years with MAP, and Meghan Jackson, a Lead Educator at the Kindergarten and first grade location next to the Memorial School, is celebrating 15 years -- twice as long as her students have been alive -- with the organization. Medfield's first day of school for the 2012-2013 calendar year is Tuesday, Sept. 4.
Medfield students will enjoy a longer summer in 2012, as the first day of school won't be until after Labor Day, according to Superintendent of Schools Bob Maguire. "This is a late year," Maguire said of the 2012-2013 Medfield Public Schools Calendar. The calendar, which can be viewed in the PDF file in the photo gallery above, was approved by the School Committee at its March 19 meeting and shows the first day of school for Medfield students, grades 1 through 12, will be Tuesday, Sept. 4. As part of Memorial School's Read Across America program, Children's Author, Grace Lin visited Memorial School this week.
Students at Memorial School welcomed children's author, Grace Lin, to their school on Monday and Tuesday and enjoyed her visit as part of the school's participation in Read Across America's program. Lin met in small groups with all first grade students on Monday, and all Kindergarten students on Tuesday. She explained the steps of having a book published and read "The Ugly Vegetables" to them. She also taught the first graders how to draw the dog from her book, "The Year of the Dog." About Grace Lin: Grace Lin's bio, from her website, www.gracelin.com. National program celebrated in Medfield last week as students from Memorial School participated in several literacy events.
The pre-schoolers, kindergarteners and first grade students at Memorial School celebrated reading last week with an assembly, community readers, and a visit from the Cat in the Hat as part of the national Read Across America literacy program. I hope residents will consider Needham Bank and other local businesses like them who regularly donate to community causes and events. I can't recall the last time I saw the Bank of America or Shaw's making these types of donations - it seems to always be Needham Bank, Roche Brothers, etc. that support their community.   more ›
