The annual coat drive is going on now at Blue Moon Bagel Cafe, Shaw's Plaza (Route 109).
The annual Medfield Lions Club and Blue Moon Bagel Cafe coat drive is on! Any "gently used coats" that are no longer needed, can be dropped off at Blue Moon Bagel Cafe. For the next three months, until the end of February 2013, a donation box will be available at the Blue Moon Bagel Cafe entrance. The coats will be given to charities in the Medfield area. The Lions have made arrangements to donate coats to two Metrowest charities -- A Place to Turn (Natick) and Project Just Because (Hopkinton) -- and Rosie's Place, a charity serving needy and homeless women located in Boston. The Medfield Food Cupboard held its annual Thanksgiving distribution this past week.
With the help of the Medfield Food Cupboard, 36 families will have a full table this Thanksgiving. The food cupboard depends on the generosity of individuals and groups in Medfield and neighboring communities in order to feed the families that depend on its service. Local families were able to fill their bags with those items as well as donations of fresh potatoes, onions, carrots and garlic donated by the Wheelock School Victory Garden; homemade breads donated by the Medfield Neighborhood Brigade; five cases of water donated by the First Baptist Church; sugar pumpkins donated by Lovells Flowers and Nursery; and turkey donated by Armand P. During last fiscal year, the Medfield Lions Club raised more than $35,000 which it then donated to the community.
The Medfield Lions raised and donated over $35,000 last fiscal year to many local community groups, according to a press release issued last week. Outgoing Lions Club President Steve Kramer said, “This has been a good year. We successfully continued many traditional events and fundraisers and initiated several new programs. The Club added eight new members who provided new energy and enthusiasm to our overall efforts.” The Medfield Lions Club is now in its 69th year of service to the local community as well as generous support for eye disease prevention and treatment. On a warm Patriots' Day, Medfield residents lined up to give the gift of life. Blue Moon Bagel Cafe owners Dan and Linda Friedman teamed with the Red Cross and the Medfield Lions Club to host a Red Cross Blood Drive, which netted 25 units of blood. Medfield Lion Tom Sweeney said "Dan and Linda have graciously worked with the Lions on several other charitable events at the 'Moon,' including a fall clothing drive in support of local shelters.” In true “Moon” spirit, Dan Friedman was first in line to donate blood and Linda presented each donor with a gift certificate. Declining attendance over the years has led to the Medfield Lions Club’s decision not to hold its annual Mother’s Day Pancake Breakfast at the American Legion this year. “Over the past several years, attendance at the breakfast has diminished from several hundred to less than two hundred,” said Medfield Lions president Steve Kramer. “The Lions conduct many fundraising and charity events during the year and with the available resources we have – we like to maximize the number of those who can take advantage of our events and programs. Three Medfield Girl Scouts working on their silver award have teamed up with the Medfield Lions to host the Royal Teddy Bear Tea. All "prince" or "princesses" from kindergarten to third grade are welcome with a special adult guest. Join the festivities being held at the Center at Medfield, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 29th. Tea will be promptly served at 2 p.m., followed by royal activities and crafts. Enjoy chatting with the Queens court, drinking tea (and lemonade), eating treats, and even dancing with the Royalty. For this charitable event, cost is $6 per person and a new teddy bear for Project Just Because – a charity where the bears will be donated to children in need. Celebrate the end of March Madness in April with the Medfield Lions Club at the American Legion on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
The Medfield Lions Club will host a March Madness Nite at the American Legion Hall on Monday, April 2 at 7:30 p.m. There will be two big screen TVs for watching the NCAA men's championship basketball game and a cash bar. Along with pizza and other goodies, there will be prizes and raffles. Silent auction items will include Patriots and Red Sox tickets. Three new members were inducted into the Medfield Lions Club at its February meeting last week. Vice District Governor and Medfield Lion member Tom Kerr conducted the initiation ceremony as Lee Tredway, Greg Hobbs and Robert Mulrey became members of the club, which now has 79 active members, the largest in District K. The sale, which runs through Dec. 18, has become the Medfield Lions Club’s principal fundraiser and features freshly sheared, USDA Premium Grade Maine Balsam Fir Christmas trees.
