Medfield beat Martha's Vineyard, 4-1 Friday in the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional preliminary round and will travel to Abington on Monday for a first round game.
Medfield softball's storybook season continues. Playing in their first state tournament game in six years, the Warriors won their first game of the postseason – a 4-1 victory over Martha's Vineyard in the preliminary round of the MIAA D2 South Sectional state tournament. The day belonged to Jackie Flint, who was stellar on the mound for Medfield, striking out 10 batters and getting out of a number of jams throughout the game. Flint struck out the side in top of the fifth inning to escape a bases loaded jam – allowing one run in the inning – and proceeded to strike out five straight batters before Martha's Vineyard ended the streak with a single to centerfield in the top of the sixth. Leading 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Medfield…

Medfield cruised past Hull in the first round of the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional girls' lacrosse tournament with a 19-5 victory. The Warriors will play in Friday's quarterfinal round against familiar foe Norwell.
The Medfield High School girls' lacrosse team did exactly what they wanted to against visiting Hull in the first round of the MIAA D2 South Sectional state tournament – start fast. The Warriors scored seemingly at will in the early going, rattling off nine straight goals in a 12-minute span, before Hull got on the board with 12:39 to play in the first half. "We came out really hard, really fast," said Medfield head coach Jason Heim. "We didn’t care who our opponent was; we didn’t want to underestimate Hull. We tried to put the game away as quickly as we can." Even after allowing Hull's first goal, Medfield continued to pressure and attack the Pirates' defense and responded to Hull's score just 16 seconds after it was tallied when Alex …

Medfield's season ends in 59-56 overtime defeat to Hopkinton Saturday in MIAA Division 2 South Sectional State Tournament.
After 32 minutes of girls' basketball, the (7) Hopkinton Hillers and (2) Medfield Warriors were forced to play an extra four minutes of overtime to decide who would advance to the semi-final round of the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional girls’ basketball tournament. Yet if not for a missed free throw or any sort of offensive production to avoid a one-point quarter by Medfield, it would have been a Medfield victory in regulation. “It (first quarter) was the key to the game because we got in early foul trouble so we couldn’t pressure like we wanted to,” Hopkinton head coach Rita Atkinson said. The Hillers held off multiple comebacks by the Warriors to win 59-56 in an overtime thriller. Only a free throw from Jen Narlee prevented a scoreless …

Medfield dispatches Hingham from state tournament with 77-25 victory Thursday and advance to Saturday's quarterfinals, where the Warriors will take on TVL foe Hopkinton.
The Medfield High girls' basketball team made quick work of Hingham in Thursday's first round of the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional State Tournament with a 77-25 victory over the Harbormen. The number two seeded Warriors outscored Hingham 20-6 in the first quarter, including a 15-0 run, to take control of the game right out of the blocks and did not allow the underdogs to build confidence. Medfield's press forced 20 turnovers by halftime and kept Hingham from getting into an offensive flow. Medfield head coach Mark Nickerson was impressed by the way his team jumped opened the tournament. "We got off to a nice start," Nickerson said. "We shot the ball well in the beginning, which was good. We threw pretty much everything at them and got a …

The Medfield High School boys’ basketball team fell to Norwood, 62-50 Tuesday in the first round of the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional State Tournament.
There was no defense for the type of shooting Norwood displayed against Medfield Tuesday as the Mustangs knocked the Warriors out of the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional State Tournament with a 62-50 first round win. Norwood hit seven 3-pointers in the first half to take a 34-25 lead into the break and finished with 10 shots made behind the arc in the game. Medfield, which never led in the game, cut the deficit to six points, 48-42, with five minutes to play in the fourth quarter before Norwood regained momentum and extended the lead back to double digits to close out the game. Norwood seniors Troy Sousa-Semper and Sean O’Neill lead the Mustangs with 13 points each. Medfield’s Johnny McCarthy was the game’s leading scorer with 16 and Drew …

The Medfield High School boys’ basketball team drew the fifth seed in the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional State Tournament and will host 12th seeded Norwood on Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. in first round action.
In a season dedicated to assistant coach Ken Brackett, who passed away suddenly on March 28, 2011, the Medfield High School boys’ basketball team turned in a 14-6 regular season – good enough to earn the fifth seed in the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional State Tournament and a first round home game. The Warriors will host Norwood (11-9), the bracket’s 12th seed on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. “[Medfield head coach] Herb Grace I think has had a tremendous year,” said Medfield Athletic Director Jon Kirby. “The boys’ basketball team has pretty much spun around early season losses, beating Westwood, Hopkinton the second time around with a fairly young team. … Losing Kenny Brackett has been a difficult thing for us all and it’s been an emotional …

Canton's late goal ends Medfield’s season in the semifinal round of the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional State Tournament.
All it took was one. One goal separated the Medfield High School and Canton High School girls’ soccer teams in Friday’s MIAA Division 2 South Sectional semifinals. That goal belonged to Canton’s Kayla Laughlin, who netted the game-winner with unde two minutes to play in the second half as the third seeded Bulldogs knocked off second seeded Medfield, 1-0 to advance to the sectional finals. “There’s nothing you can say, that was a beautiful shot,” said Medfield head coach Michael La Francesca. In a game influenced by strong winds and stronger defenses, La Francesca knew goals would be difficult to come by. “They played well, I thought we played well,” La Francesca said. “All it took was one goal. I think it’s two of the best teams in the …

The Medfield High School girls’ soccer team defeated Old Rochester, 2-0 in Wednesday's quarterfinals to advance to Friday’s MIAA Division 2 South Sectional semifinals against Canton.
The journey continues for the defending MIAA Division 2 Girls’ Soccer State Champions. Medfield shut out Old Rochester, 2-0 Wednesday in the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional quarterfinals at Calvin George Memorial Field to advance to Friday’s semifinal round against Canton. A time and location of that match has yet to be announced by the MIAA. Medfield (16-0-4) once again showcased its aggressive, ball-hawking style of play that has been a staple to the team’s success through the first 20 matches this season. The Warriors were able to dominate Tri-Valley League foe Hopkinton with that style of play in Monday’s 4-0 first round win. On Wednesday, Medfield was back at it on offense, creating chance after chance and outshooting Old Rochester, …

The Medfield High School girls' soccer team advances to the quarterfinal round of the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional State Tournament after Monday's 4-0 victory over Hopkinton.
An energized Medfield High School girls' soccer team erupted for four first-half goals Monday to open its MIAA Division 2 South Sectional State Tournament play with a 4-0 victory over Hopkinton Monday at Calvin George Fisher Memorial Field. It was Medfield's third straight victory over Hopkinton this season as the Warriors defeated its Tri-Valley League foe 4-2 on Sept. 9 and 2-1 on Oct. 11. Monday's victory was arguably Medfield's most impressive effort this season as the Warriors dominated in every phase of the game. Medfield (15-0-4), the tournament's second seed, came out of the gate flying against the Hillers, swarming to the ball with an up-tempo style of soccer. The Warriors' aggressive play paid off early as Caroline Russell netted…
