Fragola: A Q&A with MHS Student Joe Marie

Recently, Medfield High School junior Joe Marie won the CDMASC vice president race. CDMASC stands for Central District Massachusetts Association of Student Councils. There are over 50 schools involved in the Central District, and Marie ran up against eight other talented students from these schools. I recently had a chance to sit down with Marie and ask him some questions about the victory and what it means for his political career. Remy Fragola (RF): What does this mean for your political career? Joe Marie (JM): It is a big step in terms of holding office at a regional level. Also, it should be a good learning experience. RF: How long did it take to write your speech? JM: It took me about 15 minutes to write and many hours of practicing …

Shelley: 'All Quiet on the Western Front' MHS Student Art Exhibit

“Produce an image translating your understanding of a significant moment in Paul Baumer’s narration in the novel All Quiet on the Western Front, which seems to depict the truth about WWI, in your opinion.” This is the prompt that roughly 150 students from Ms. Libby Wiese and Mrs. Sarah Brown’s sophomore classes were faced with. If you’re a junior or senior, then you probably remember reading All Quiet and having to produce a graphic novel. This project consisted of hours spent up late at night stressing out over the amount of work that was required. O’Reilly: Medfield High’s Mandarin Program

Ni hao! For the first time in the history of Medfield High School, students have the unique opportunity to learn the world’s most popular language from a Chinese resident. In past years, Mandarin class was taught by teacher Mrs. Batts – who also is fluent in Spanish. However, for the 2011-2012 school year, Ms. Li has traveled from her hometown of Bengbu, China to Medfield to teach Mandarin. She teaches two high school classes of 12 to 15 students and sixth, seventh, and eighth grade classes in the middle school. Ms. Li, who majored in English in college, wanted to come teach in America to “learn more about the language and the culture.” She also cited “the desire to give American students the opportunity to learn Mandarin and Chinese …

Feinberg: Medfield Boys' Lacrosse Sets Sights on Three-Peat in Division 2

The Medfield High School boys' varsity lacrosse team won back-to-back state titles last season. It was a tremendous achievement in Medfield High School sports. However, after the season, the team faced turmoil when its head coach, Bob Aronson was let go. The reason for his dismissal is still unknown. The team’s new coaches, John Isaf and Mike Douglas, were assistant coaches of the team last season and while the Warriors may appear to be different from the outside with new head coaches, they are still the same hardworking team on the field. The team is led this season by senior captains Conor Roddy, Clay Richard, Tom Conlon and Cam Donnelly. Vara: Medfield High School Students 'Having Fun' with Activities for Life Course

The Activities for Life class has become a popular choice for students at Medfield High School. Current freshmen and sophomores flock to the gym during their lunch period, eager to catch a glimpse of the class’s plan for the day. On the first day, Medfield High School Athletic Director and teacher, Mr. Jon Kirby, met with the class and together, they planned a week’s worth of activities. The activities go as follows: Dodge Ball Monday, Scurry Hockey Tuesday, Mat Ball Wednesday, Pickle Ball Thursday, and Fun Friday, where students have the freedom to choose their own activity. “Activities for Life is a time where I can leave the classroom and just have a fun time,” said senior Michael Mulrey. “We’re all out here with one goal in mind, and …

Bryant: MHS Adds Government to its List of AP Classes for Seniors

This year, Medfield High School added an AP United States Government and Politics course to its curriculum for seniors. The course covers various topics of the political system, including Congress, the executive branch, constitutional rights, the judicial system, political history, and much more. Mr. Kevin Murphy is the newly hired teacher for both this course and US History classes. He has experience working within the American government and has served as a Foreign Service officer in Iraq, Chile, and Algeria. Upon entering his teaching position at MHS, Mr. Murphy had never taught an AP course before. “I had high expectations of the caliber of students,” he said. “I have not been disappointed in that.” AP Government and Politics has taken…

Brown: Spanish IV Students Prep for 'El Gran Proyecto' (Major Project) at Medfield High

Beginning in February, Medfield High School's Spanish IV students have been preparing oral presentations about their lives, which will be presented throughout the semester during class. The title of the project, “Lo que me importa,” translates to “that which interests me.” Students have the opportunity to select three topics to speak about during their presentation: an important person in their lives, their favorite activity and a third topic of choice. According to Ms. Leori Seri, MHS Spanish teacher, it is a “department goal to promote speaking proficiency among our students.” The World Languages faculty hopes that “students are able to communicate and explain their lives with native speakers” by talking about their interests to their …

'Hoops for the Homeless' Returns to Medfield High

This March, the fourth annual Hoops for the Homeless basketball tournament returns to Medfield High School. The tournament will be held in the Medfield High School gym this week, beginning March 12. Hoops for the Homeless is a three vs. three basketball tournament run by MHS’ Warriors for the Homeless group. All profits raised from this event will be donated to local charities. The cost for the tournament is $20 per person, and teams can consist of three to five players. Each player will receive a T-shirt with their team’s respective color and will also get the option to customize a name or number on the back of the shirt. Teams will be assigned a division and play each team in their division once. After divisional play is over, each team’…

The Medfield High School Boosters recently approved a grant that was submitted by SAT/ACT Prep course teacher Mrs. Bethan Sancher. The class consists of one term in English, which Sancher teaches, and the other in math. She made the request because she “wanted to try and make the SAT Prep class more about life and test-taking skills.”  Sancher explained that while students may take the SAT only two times, there will be many other tests in school and then later on in college.  By focusing on life …
