The Medfield Jazz Band will travel to China in April. Fundraising efforts are underway to help offset costs.
The Medfield High School Jazz Band has received another sizeable donation toward funding its trip to China in April. Last week, Medfield Police Officer Chelle Manganello stopped in to see Medfield Music Director Doug Olsen and delivered a $1,000 check from the Medfield Police Association for the Jazz Band’s music trip to China in April. (Manganello serves as the association’s treasurer.) On Saturday, Feb. 2, the Jazz Band will hold a concert -- Jazzin' for China -- at 7 p.m. at The Center at Medfield to cap off the China fundraising campaign. Tickets are on sale at Lord’s until midday Saturday for $50 each, and will be sold at the door if still available. Earlier this month, the Medfield High School Alumni Association also made a $1,000…

The MHS Jazz Band will perform at Lord's on Jan. 12 from noon to 1 p.m. in recognition for all the support the store, and the Kelly family, has shown community groups over its 73 year history. The public is encouraged to attend.
On Saturday, Jan. 12, from noon to 1 p.m. the Medfield High School Jazz Band will be performing at Lord's Department Store as a way to thank the Kelly family for many years of selling tickets to high school music performances, plays, Trolley Tours and other community events. Organizers call this "musical therapy" to help the community deal with last week's news that the iconic store will be closing next month after 73 years in business. The public is encouraged to stop into Lord’s during the event to express their own appreciation for the support the Kelly family and Lord's staff have provided to Medfield community groups over the years. Also during the event, tickets will be on sale for the Jazz Band’s Feb. 2 “Jazzin’ for China” …

Editor's Note: The following information was provided by Cathy Curbow and Alison O'Leary Murray.
The Medfield High School Jazz Band began its February school vacation in exciting fashion, taking first place in the Charles Mingus Institute's High School Band Competition in New York on Feb. 19-20. The trombone section was named outstanding section and MHS senior Kevin Holbrook was awarded outstanding soloist at the competition. Holbrook recalled a past experience of performing with the band in New York at the Essentially Ellington Competition, while he was a freshman, inspired him to work hard and get where he is at today with his music. "To see that kind of enthusiasm and hard work it takes to get to that level, the top players have such passion," Holbrook said. "That's what inspired me." Medfield School Committee approves MHS Jazz Band trip to Charles Mingus Competition in New York
The Medfield High School Jazz Band has received an invitation to the Charles Mingus Competition in New York. On Monday, Music Director Doug Olsen requested permission to travel out-of-state to go to the competition. The committee quickly approved the trip, allowing Olsen to start setting up plans for the trip. During his proposal to the committee, Olsen explained the only expenses for the trip would be the travel into the New York. “We just need to get the kids there,” Olsen said. “Then they spend the day with world famous musicians and the next day is the competition.” More specifically, the Saturday portion will include a day full of clinics and workshops at the Manhattan School of Music, including master classes for instruments and …
