The Medfield Jazz Band will travel to China in April. Fundraising efforts are underway to help offset costs.
The Medfield High School Jazz Band has received another sizeable donation toward funding its trip to China in April. Last week, Medfield Police Officer Chelle Manganello stopped in to see Medfield Music Director Doug Olsen and delivered a $1,000 check from the Medfield Police Association for the Jazz Band’s music trip to China in April. (Manganello serves as the association’s treasurer.) On Saturday, Feb. 2, the Jazz Band will hold a concert -- Jazzin' for China -- at 7 p.m. at The Center at Medfield to cap off the China fundraising campaign. MHS jazz choir, ensembles 'wow' crowd at Tuesday's Jazz Winterfest Concert.
"Jazz speaks for life." These were the words Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. used to describe the complex, urban music during his 1964 opening address to the Berlin Jazz Festival. This address was found inside the MHS Jazz Winterfest Concert program and served as an educational piece to gain understanding and perspective about the music genre featured Tuesday – jazz. But the music truly came to life when the students took the stage, picked up their instruments and began to play or sing. The pieces performed by the jazz choir, the jazz ensemble I and jazz ensemble II Tuesday night in the MHS auditorium were full of emotion and complex rhythms and played brilliantly.
