New Jersey Sandy Victims Send Thanks to Medfield

Hurricane Sandy victims send their thanks for the tractor trailer full of donations collected by a local family and the town of Medfield.

Last month, Medfield residents filled a 26-foot tractor-trailer full of donations for victims of Hurricane Sandy. This month, the thank you notes are pouring in, say mother-daughter organizers Monica Reid and Kim Joline.  "Words cannot express our most sincere gratitude and appreciation to you, your family, and your community for all that you did to help our community during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy," said one letter from Big Brother Big Sisters of Ocean City. "Our families are beginning to rebuild their lives one day at a time because of caring people, people like yourselves; and the town of Medfield, MA."  Reid also received a phone call from Sue Sedivic, CEO of Big Brother Big Sister. "She called my mom after the truck arrived …

State Troopers Recognized for Helping in NY, NJ After Hurricane Sandy

"There's nothing that I can compare to what I saw down there," said one of the 25 troopers that helped out after Sandy devastated nearby states.

Before Hurricane Sandy's full scope of devastation in New York and New Jersey was even known, 25 men and women from the Massachusetts State Police were on their way to assist those who had been displaced from their homes. "When I reached out to ask if the state police would be willing to field a group of 25 people, I already knew the answer," Undersecretary for Homeland Security and Director of MEMA, Kurt Schwartz, said in a press conference in Framingham on Monday. "The answer was a resounding 'yes.'" One of the troopers was Brian Dunn, who works out of the South Boston barracks. "There's nothing that I can compare to what I saw down there," said the 28-year veteran of the force. "We were there when they came home for the first time. For …

Local Plumber Collects Donations for Hurricane Victims

Scott Andrews filled a box truck with donations last week and drove them to New York on Friday.

While people took a day off work on Friday to go shopping, Scott Andrews -- a self-employed plumber -- took a rare day off to help the people of Rockaway Beach, New York. "I felt like lending a hand," Andrews said. When a friend asked for donations a few weeks ago, Andrews said he and his wife put together a box for the friend to take to New York. When she returned and told Andrews about the devastation, he knew he had to do more. "When she came back, she gave us an update and she showed us a YouTube video, and I knew I wanted to do something," Andrews said. He also visited www.RockawayHelp.com where "there's a whole bunch of people asking for help." Editor's Note: There is a PBS video at www.RockawayHelp.com called "Inside the Megastorm" …

Medfield Sends UHaul of Donations to NJ Hurricane Victims

A local mother-daughter team thought they would collect a few things for friends who were hit by Hurricane Sandy.

When Hurricane Sandy hit New York and New Jersey, Kim Joline and her mother, Monica Reid, knew they wanted to help. What happened next, Joline said, was unbelievable. "The people of Medfield are absolutely amazing," Joline said as she stood beside a 24 foot long UHaul truck packed with 200 boxes of donations. After a quick email to family and friends, and then shared with the Medfield Angels/Neighbor Brigade, hundreds of people started dropping off items for the hurricane victims. "We were getting stuff dropped off an hour ago," Joline said on Friday. "This week has just been huge; it's just awesome how much people gave." Thousands of donated items were donated including food, water, clothing, toiletries, baby items (clothing, diapers, …

Letter to the Editor: High School Raises More Than $2K for Hurricane Sandy Victims

The Medfield High School Student Council organized a fundraiser that raised $2,180 for the American Red Cross to help victims of Hurricane Sandy.

To the Editor, I'm contacting you on behalf of the Medfield High School Student Council to inform you that the Student Council led a Red Cross Hurricane Sandy relief effort last Friday, November 2. Sophomore Student Council representative Michael Colivas made a montage of photographs of Hurricane Sandy's wreckage and we showed it to all students and teachers, encouraging everyone to donate $1. We figured that if everyone contributed $1, we would reach our goal of $1,000. To our surprise, with the help of MHS students, faculty and the Medfield community, we raised $2,180...surpassing our goal by $1,180! Although we already informally thanked the student body and faculty for their generous donations, we feel it would be appropriate for the…
