Medfield Girls' Hockey Suffers Second Loss of Season

Warriors shut out by Lincoln-Sudbury, 3-0 Monday in Concord.

CONCORD – A repeat out-of-conference match-up with Lincoln-Sudbury proved to be less successful this time around for the Medfield High girls' hockey team Monday. Opening the scoring with a penalty shot by freshman Marylou Cummings, host L-S beat Medfield, 3-0 at the Valley Sports Arena in Concord to give the Warriors their second loss of the season. “We skated against this team earlier in the season and knew they were a great team,” said L-S head coach Greg Gammons. “We knew if we could get ahead and put the pressure on (Medfield) things would work out.” The first goal was made possible through a blue line steal by senior teammate Sarah Haberman. After intercepting a pass, Haberman sent the puck to Cummings who managed to cut behind all …

Medfield Varsity Girls' Hockey Players Share Love of the Game

Members of the Medfield High girls' hockey team devote their Saturday mornings to help teach young children to skate and play hockey.

They slip, they slide and sometimes collide with one another. Occasionally, they even call a self-imposed “time-out” and make a hasty retreat. There are tears of frustration and more than a little envy when they witness the more experienced children actually playing the game. Welcome to the world of the Learn to Play Hockey newbies: future Medfield hockey stars in the making. The program, which accommodates children aged four years old and up, is sponsored by Medfield Youth Hockey and is designed to teach ice skating skills and hockey fundamentals to the town's younger residents. A vital part of the program is the volunteer participation of the Medfield girls' hockey team, who send members of the team to Norfolk Arena, each Saturday …

Leadership Means More Than A Letter On A Jersey For Medfield Girls' Hockey Team

Warriors captain Meara Stack the latest example of why Medfield is 12-1-2 this season.

The Medfield High School girls' hockey team is 12-1-2 this season because of talent but perhaps more importantly because of leadership. Leadership from first-year head coach Molly Norton. Leadership from captains Amanda Cronin and Meara Stack and leadership from sophomore goalie Mimi Borkan.  It was Stack's leadership against Westwood on Feb. 5 that exemplified what the 2010-11 Warriors are all about. Medfield led 2-1 after two periods but Norton was faced with a difficult decision during the intermission leading up to the third period. "About halfway into the second period, Mimi was covering the puck up when players were crashing the net," Norton said. "In efforts to save the puck, she got a knee to the head.  Mimi got a bloody nose that …
