Town Garage Goes to Vote Tonight

The issue of the $10.5 million new town garage will go before Town Meeting tonight.

Town Meeting will be asked tonight to support a plan for a new town garage. If voters agree, they will then be asked to approve a debt exclusion in a special election on Tuesday. The cost of the project, which was proposed two years ago and denied by voters, is expected to cost approximately $10.5 million. When the bids were opened last week, they came in about $500,000 lower than projected. Members of the Permanent Building Committee say the average increased tax impact would be 37 cents per 1,000 at its peak but will average approximately 25 cents per $1,000 valuation over the course of the 20 year debt. Approval of the project would require passage at town meeting tonight (April 29) as well as in the voting booth at a special town …

Winslow Hoping for Republican Nomination on Tuesday

Medfield Patch recently sat down with Rep. Dan Winslow at Blue Moon Bakery.

Medfield Patch recently sat down with State Rep. Dan Winslow at Blue Moon to discuss his run for State Senator. The state election is on Tuesday.  When Daniel B. Winslow, 54 (R-Norfolk), first ran for State Representative of the 9th Norfolk District, it was a completely different campaign: He rode his bicycle door-to-door to meet as many voters as possible to win their vote. But this campaign is different as he drives all over the Commonwealth in hopes of winning the Republican nomination in the primary election on April 30 to fill the Senate seat recently vacated by now Secretary of State John Kerry.  "This race is different. I have to get 150,000 votes to win this race, I needed 10,000 votes to win my other race," Winslow said. "The …

Selectmen's Table Was Missing Someone Tuesday Night

Ann Thompson did not run for re-election after 30 years as selectman.

Folks are bound to be thinking something was missing at last night's Board of Selectmen's meeting, and they'd be right. This will be the first time in 30 years that Ann Thompson was not sitting at the table as a selectman. Last month, Thompson opted not to run again for the seat she first took in 1983 after serving five years as a library trustee and five years on the warrant committee. Thompson said she plans to continue to serve on the many committees to which she was appointed as a selectman.  Click HERE to see the highlights from her 40-year career in community service as noted by friends and family who attended her retirement party.  Medfield thanks you, Ann!

How Much Does An Election Cost?

Short answer: It varies.

Medfield held its annual town election on Monday in which all 10 races were uncontested and only 539 of the town's 8,403 voters went to the polls.  That raised a question from one of our readers: What does it cost the taxpayers of Medfield to hold this unopposed election?? Couldn't this have been combined with the April election? Do the bylaws require it to be held before town meeting??? Doesn't make sense... So we went to Town Hall. Cost Town Clerk Carol Mayer says the cost of Monday's election was approximately $5,000 but it varies by election. The costs that hold standard are those associated with programming the town's five voting machines (four standard, one handicapped) which run about $1,500 per election. The costs that vary are …

DeSorgher Resigns as Curator at Historical Society

After 37 years with the the Medfield Historical Society, Richard DeSorgher will step down because of his impending election to the Board of Selectmen.

After working with the Medfield Historical Society for 37 years, Richard DeSorgher has stepped down as a curator with the society.  DeSorgher is running unopposed for a seat on the Medfield Board of Selectmen later this month.  In an email to his fellow curators, DeSorgher said: Unless a massive write-in campaign surfaces, I will be elected Medfield's new selectman on March 25. Having been a selectman before, back when I was in my 20s, I know the time that the office will take. I do not want to be in a position of not being able to give 100% of my time and effort to a commitment. I am therefore resigning as a curator and as program director from the Historical Society, as I do not feel I can give the time needed to the time required as a…

It's Official: DeSorgher Running for Office

On Monday, Richard DeSorgher turned in his application papers.

Richard DeSorgher made it official on Monday -- he's running for a seat on the Board of Selectmen. Selectman Ann Thompson will not run for re-election after serving 30 years on the board. This year she serves as Chairman of the Board.  On Monday, DeSorgher turned in his nomination papers to Medfield Town Clerk Carol Mayer. The election will take place on March 25.  While only 50 signatures are required, DeSorgher said more than 40 volunteers canvassed the town over the past month and a half to collect a total of 1,000 signatures to make DeSorgher an official candidate for selectman.  In December, DeSorgher sent a letter to Patch readers explaining why he is running for office. He says: As a life-long resident of Medfield, I have been …

DeSorgher Running for Board of Selectmen

Richard DeSorgher announces his run for the Board of Selectmen.

Dear Medfield Citizen, I write announcing my candidacy for Selectman and seek your vote in the upcoming March Town Elections. As a life-long resident of Medfield, I have been given much by the town and its citizens. As a strong believer in the view that “when much is given, much will be asked,” I feel an obligation to give back to my hometown and I now have the time, energy and ability to do so.  Medfield provided me a safe environment in which to grow up and, because of countless volunteers, allowed me to participate in town sports and activities. I was given an excellent education in the Medfield Public Schools and graduation from Medfield High School enabled me to go on to college and receive both undergraduate and master’s degrees from…
