Police Association Donates $1,000 for Music Trip to China

The Medfield Jazz Band will travel to China in April. Fundraising efforts are underway to help offset costs.

  The Medfield High School Jazz Band has received another sizeable donation toward funding its trip to China in April. Last week, Medfield Police Officer Chelle Manganello stopped in to see Medfield Music Director Doug Olsen and delivered a $1,000 check from the Medfield Police Association for the Jazz Band’s music trip to China in April. (Manganello serves as the association’s treasurer.)  On Saturday, Feb. 2, the Jazz Band will hold a concert -- Jazzin' for China -- at 7 p.m. at The Center at Medfield to cap off the China fundraising campaign. Dale Street's 5th Grade Band Showcases Skill at Spring Concert

Under the direction of Ryan Dexter, 92 Dale Street students performed their spring concert for family and friends this past Tuesday night.

The Dale Street Elementary School grade five band showed off their skills Tuesday night with a Spring Concert for family and friends.  Director Ryan Dexter complimented the students and said they had come a long way since the beginning of the school year.  The band includes 14 flutes, 24 clarinets, 16 alto saxophones, 20 trumpets, six trombones, and 12 percussion. Each section was highlighted during the performance.  The program included renditions of Big Rock Candy Mountain, Cardiff Castle, Attack of the Slide Trombones, Montego Bay, Regal March, Popcorn Prelude, and Let's Go Band!

Medfield Music Director Doug Olsen to perform at Zullo Gallery on June 8

Needham Bank is sponsoring the June 8 fundraiser at the Zullo Gallery featuring Medfield Music director Doug Olsen.

After witnessing the talents first-hand of Medfield's jazz students at the recent Jazz Night, Needham Bank has put its support behind Music Director Doug Olsen’s fundraising show for the Zullo Gallery on Friday, June 8, in addition to the MEMO concert series kicking off with the jazz band’s performance at the Gazebo on June 14. “The Medfield jazz band has had an amazing year, and the students are fortunate to have Doug Olsen leading it. PHOTOS: Medfield High School Band Performs at Boston Symphony Hall

Check out these scenes from the Medfield High School band's performance at Boston Symphony Hall this past Saturday.

Medfield High School's band recently received a gold medal at the Massachusetts Instrumental & Choral Conductors Association (MICCA) held at Bellingham High School and as a result, was invited to play at Boston Symphony Hall on Saturday, April 14. Medfield High School senior Andrew Velichansky said the gold medal resembled a "superior rating" in the MICCA competition and earned the trip to Boston to play other gold medal bands.  Medfield Music Director Doug Olsen directed the band at Symphony Hall this past Saturday. Letter: Medfield High School Jazz Band Reaches Fundraising Goal

Medfield Music Director Doug Olsen writes in to thank everyone who helped the Medfield High School Jazz band raise the $12,000 needed to participate in the Essentially Ellington competition in New York City in May.

Dear Editor, Thanks to local businesses, groups, community members and music supporters, we are thrilled to announce that we have officially met our goal of raising $12,000 to send the Medfield High School Jazz Band to the Essentially Ellington competition at Lincoln Center next month. In my 20-plus years here in Medfield, I have had the pleasure of not only seeing our Medfield students grow and develop musically, but I’ve witnessed the unwavering community support of the entire Medfield Music Program. 'Jazz Up Your Day' on April 7 to Help Send MHS Jazz Band to NYC

The Medfield Music Association has launched a “Dollars for Duke” campaign to raise funds to help cover the anticipated $12,000 cost of the Medfield High School jazz band trip to New York City for the prestigious Essentially Ellington festival and competit

As part of the “Dollars for Duke” campaign to send the Medfield High School Jazz Band to the Essentially Ellington competition at Lincoln Center, May 4 to 6, Jazz band members will be taking part in “Jazz ‘Round Town” on Saturday, April 7. Members of the band will be giving public performances at various locations around Medfield on Saturday, April 7, kicking off with a 9:30 to 11 a.m. performance at Blue Moon. They will also be playing in front of Needham Bank from 10 to 11:30 a.m., and at Lovell’s from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The last performance of the day will be at the Gazebo from noon to 1:30 p.m. All performances will take place rain or shine. New York, New York – Medfield Jazz Band will Return to Big Apple in May as Ellington Finalist

After recently competing in the Charles Mingus Music Festival in NYC, the Medfield High School jazz band was informed it would be heading back to New York in May to compete in the "Essentially Ellington" competition.

Editor's note: The following was submitted by Chris McCue. Two days after returning from the Mingus Festival in New York City, the Medfield High School jazz band learned it would be returning to New York once again – this time as a finalist in the “Essentially Ellington” festival and competition, May 4-6 at Lincoln Center. This will be the high school's third time earning a spot in the Essentially Ellington festival and competition that pays homage to jazz great Duke Ellington. The program participated in the New York competition in 2005 and most recently in 2008.
