No official charities set up for the aftermath of the explosion at the Boston Marathon finish line yet.
After the explosions that rocked the Boston Marathon's Copley Square finish line on Monday, a number of readers have asked how they can help. The Red Cross reports that they have enough blood donations and financial resources available for the current needs, but are requesting blood donations and blood drives in the coming weeks. SIPS Students holding gently-used coat drive at the Blake Middle School.
Blake Middle School students SIPS (Sudents in Public Service) Students, under the direction of Social Studies teacher, Michael Gow, are holding their annual gently-used coat drive sponsored by Anton's Cleaners. Over the past eight years, SIPS students have collected nearly 800 coats. These coats have helped needy families across multiple neighborhoods in Massachusetts. Parents and students are encouraged to help by donating "gently used" coats through Friday, January 11. Donation boxes are located at the main entrance to the school.

The annual coat drive is going on now at Blue Moon Bagel Cafe, Shaw's Plaza (Route 109).
The annual Medfield Lions Club and Blue Moon Bagel Cafe coat drive is on! Any "gently used coats" that are no longer needed, can be dropped off at Blue Moon Bagel Cafe. For the next three months, until the end of February 2013, a donation box will be available at the Blue Moon Bagel Cafe entrance. The coats will be given to charities in the Medfield area. The Lions have made arrangements to donate coats to two Metrowest charities -- A Place to Turn (Natick) and Project Just Because (Hopkinton) -- and Rosie's Place, a charity serving needy and homeless women located in Boston. The Medfield High School Student Council organized a fundraiser that raised $2,180 for the American Red Cross to help victims of Hurricane Sandy.
To the Editor, I'm contacting you on behalf of the Medfield High School Student Council to inform you that the Student Council led a Red Cross Hurricane Sandy relief effort last Friday, November 2. Sophomore Student Council representative Michael Colivas made a montage of photographs of Hurricane Sandy's wreckage and we showed it to all students and teachers, encouraging everyone to donate $1. We figured that if everyone contributed $1, we would reach our goal of $1,000. To our surprise, with the help of MHS students, faculty and the Medfield community, we raised $2,180...surpassing our goal by $1,180! Are you looking at this year's Halloween candy, thinking, "What will we do with all this candy?" The Medfield Angels/Neighbor Brigade network has the answer: Donate it to community programs and soldier cheer boxes. The Angels will be collecting leftover Halloween candy again this year on Thursday and Friday. All candy -- loose or bagged -- is welcome. McLean Conner, 10, asked his friends to bring toys that could be donated to the Toys for Tots program.
When McLean Conner was getting ready for his 10th birthday party, he decided to ask his friends to bring toys that could be donated to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. "We were a little embarrassed coming back from Birthday parties with industrial garbage bags full of gifts," said his parents, Penni and Nick Conner of Medfield. "We think he has begun to realize how fortunate he and his brother are (and our family as a whole), and that not all kids are guaranteed an enchanted Christmas like theirs," said Nick. 59 donors show up at Medfield Lions Club Tuesday to give blood.
The Medfield Lions Club and the Red Cross hosted a blood drive at American Legion Beckwith Post 110 on Tuesday. While the nurses from the Red Cross said they expected a turnout of about 45 donors, 59 people showed up to give blood. “I think we had a fantastic turnout,” Lions Club chairman Tom Sweeney said. “The Red Cross could have used one more nurse, but everybody did a great job.” Of the 59 people that showed up, 34 scheduled an appointment ahead of time, while 25 were walk-ins. Medfield resident Helen Williams used to work at Mass. General Hospital, and said she used to give blood a lot while she worked there, but she had not donated in awhile. “Then I retired," said Williams.
