Red Cross Seeking Blood Donations In Coming Weeks

No official charities set up for the aftermath of the explosion at the Boston Marathon finish line yet.

After the explosions that rocked the Boston Marathon's Copley Square finish line on Monday, a number of readers have asked how they can help. The Red Cross reports that they have enough blood donations and financial resources available for the current needs, but are requesting blood donations and blood drives in the coming weeks. From the statement released by the Red Cross yesterday:  We also know that many people want to help. Thanks to the generosity of volunteer blood donors, there is currently enough blood on the shelves to meet patient needs. The Red Cross also has the financial resources it needs to support this event right now. We are asking those who want to help to make an appointment to give blood in the coming weeks and …

Here is a list of ways to live a greener lifestyle, plus some resources to help you go green right here in Medfield.

If you aren’t ready to throw some solar panels on the roof and ditch your power company, but would like to save some money by living a greener life, here are 20 tips to help you get started. Around the house: 1. Buy food, including spices and flour, in bulk. You’ll save money and reduce the amount of packaging that goes in the trash.   2. Make sure your thermostat is set properly. Lowering the default settings during the summer and at night could save you almost $200 a year, according to Energy Star. More tips at energystar.gov. 3. Insulate your hot water heater. You can also "go green" by choosing Viridian Energy as the energy supplier for your home or office. Viridian is a socially responsible supplier of green energy to electric companies such as National Grid, NStar, etc. Most people don't know that, due to energy deregulation, they have the right to choose the supplier that their company uses for their home or business. So why not choose responsibly …   more ›

Letter to the Editor: High School Raises More Than $2K for Hurricane Sandy Victims

The Medfield High School Student Council organized a fundraiser that raised $2,180 for the American Red Cross to help victims of Hurricane Sandy.

To the Editor, I'm contacting you on behalf of the Medfield High School Student Council to inform you that the Student Council led a Red Cross Hurricane Sandy relief effort last Friday, November 2. Sophomore Student Council representative Michael Colivas made a montage of photographs of Hurricane Sandy's wreckage and we showed it to all students and teachers, encouraging everyone to donate $1. We figured that if everyone contributed $1, we would reach our goal of $1,000. To our surprise, with the help of MHS students, faculty and the Medfield community, we raised $2,180...surpassing our goal by $1,180! Although we already informally thanked the student body and faculty for their generous donations, we feel it would be appropriate for the…

Too Much Candy? Donate It to Charity

Drop off your excess candy on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2 to be donated to soldiers and local community programs.

Are you looking at this year's Halloween candy, thinking, "What will we do with all this candy?"  The Medfield Angels/Neighbor Brigade network has the answer: Donate it to community programs and soldier cheer boxes. The Angels will be collecting leftover Halloween candy again this year on Thursday and Friday. All candy -- loose or bagged -- is welcome. "We will be giving the unopened bags to Medfield Youth Outreach. They will use this candy for their different programs," said Laurie Nealon who, along with Kathleen Cahill, coordinates the program.    "We will be giving the rest to the United Church of Christ for making cheer boxes for soldiers and also Operation American Soldier. Both of these organizations will be sending the candy to …

Ten-year-old Donates Birthday Gifts to Toys for Tots

McLean Conner, 10, asked his friends to bring toys that could be donated to the Toys for Tots program.

When McLean Conner was getting ready for his 10th birthday party, he decided to ask his friends to bring toys that could be donated to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. "We were a little embarrassed coming back from Birthday parties with industrial garbage bags full of gifts," said his parents, Penni and Nick Conner of Medfield. "We think he has begun to realize how fortunate he and his brother are (and our family as a whole), and that not all kids are guaranteed an enchanted Christmas like theirs," said Nick.  "This was his 10th Birthday and we think we will carry on this tradition every year.  We are so proud of his unselfish behavior." Residents Give Back By Donating Blood At Medfield Lions Club

59 donors show up at Medfield Lions Club Tuesday to give blood.

The Medfield Lions Club and the Red Cross hosted a blood drive at American Legion Beckwith Post 110 on Tuesday. While the nurses from the Red Cross said they expected a turnout of about 45 donors, 59 people showed up to give blood. “I think we had a fantastic turnout,” Lions Club chairman Tom Sweeney said. “The Red Cross could have used one more nurse, but everybody did a great job.” Of the 59 people that showed up, 34 scheduled an appointment ahead of time, while 25 were walk-ins. Medfield resident Helen Williams used to work at Mass. General Hospital, and said she used to give blood a lot while she worked there, but she had not donated in awhile.  “Then I retired," said Williams. "The last time I gave blood was two years ago.”  Williams …
