Medfield Schools Roundup: Woodland Theatre Company, FY13 Budget Update and Virtual Schools

Here’s some news and notes from around the Medfield Public School District.

The buzz around the Woodland Theatre Company’s recently formed partnership with Medfield High School has been overwhelmingly positive. The company debuted in Medfield with its three-day production of "Cabaret" in the Lowell Mason Auditorium at the end of January and will be providing workshops to interested Medfield High School drama and theatre students. Medfield High School senior Andrew Velichansky is involved in drama and theatre at MHS and spoke highly of the school’s involvement with Woodland Theatre Company. Velichansky, who is the stage manager for the MHS drama club, worked with crew members during Woodland Theatre’s production of "Cabaret." “It was a great experience,” Velichansky said. “It was a great learning opportunity for me…

School Committee Agenda: Budget Update, Virtual Schools and Concussion Policy

The Medfield School Committee meets Monday to discuss the latest happenings around the district.

The Medfield School Committee will meet Monday to discuss the following business: The Medfield High School Student Advisory Council will meet with the committee to discuss grade-by-grade what is happening in the high school and what's on the horizon. Medfield Superintendent of Schools Bob Maguire will update the committee on the fiscal year 2013 budget process. At the committee's last meeting, it adopted Maguire's recommendation of a .87 percent budget increase over FY12. The committee will discuss proposed legislation on virtual schools and what it means in Medfield. Meeting Notes: School Committee Reviews Interim Concussion Policy

The Medfield School Committee reviewed the draft of an interim concussion policy and received an update on the FY13 budget at Monday's meeting.

Bob Maguire, Medfield’s Superintendent of Schools, discussed the need for the School Committee to adopt an interim policy on concussions by Jan. 1 and a final policy in March during Monday’s meeting. "There really are good procedures that are in place [in the Medfield School District]," said Maguire. "The thing that we weren’t as clear on in understanding is that there needs to be a School Committee policy in place. We are not the only ones in that position. The Department of Public Health actually has put out some clarifications for what is actually required of school committees to be done." Maguire said there have been "several" school districts across the Commonwealth that currently do not have a School Committee policy on concussions …
