One of the many highlights from the "Celebrate Lord's" party on Feb. 15 was an Ode to Lord's by long-time employee Barbara Bolzani.
Barbara Bolzani has worked at Lord's Department Store for more than 20 years. Lord's will close its doors one final time on Feb. 28 after 73 years in business. Bolzani was also a surprise speaker at Friday night's "Celebrate Lord's" party held at the store. The lunch counter at Lord's, recently operating as Ruthie's Diner, closed on Saturday in preparation for the department store's closure on Feb. 28.
Nine-year-old Justin Marcel has been going to Lord's lunch counter since he was two weeks old. His grandmother, Frances Marcel, has been going there for the last 40 years. That tradition came to an end on Saturday when the lunch counter, recently operating as Ruthie's Diner inside Lord's Department Store, served its last cup of coffee in preparation for the store's closing next week. "I've been coming here for 40 years and sitting on this same stool," said Frances who was sitting on that stool at the "Celebrate Lord's" community party on Friday night. "We're devastated." To the Editor: On February 15th our community honored the Medfield institution, Lord’s Department Store, in a wonderful celebration that took place at the store and will be remembered for years to come. Lord’s will close its doors for the last time on February 28th. A Patch reader suggests shopping at local hometown stores instead of big box stores.
Dear Editor: I have a suggestion for all those who are lamenting the closing of Lord’s Department Store in Medfield and are looking for ways to honor the store and its owners, its tradition and its memory: Stop shopping at the big box stores. Make no mistake about it: of the many factors that I'm sure went into Tom's and Nancy's decision to close, there can be little doubt that competition from chain stores at the malls and especially the huge-volume players like Walmart may have been the biggest. But if you ever find yourself complaining about the way those stores make you feel as a customer - about being forgotten and left on hold when calling for information, about store personnel who know nothing about the items they're selling, and …
Be sure to record your favorite stories in the memory book or in an audiovisual recording at Friday's party. They will be kept by the Kelly family and the Medfield Historical Society.

Store owners have created a memory book where customers have started to write down their favorite Lord's memory including one little girl whose dream it is that the owners will change their minds and keep the store open.
The memory binder at the front of Lord's Department Store is chuck full of memories from people who have loved the store over the years -- people who are grieving the loss of their beloved Lord's while doing what they can to preserve its good name. Customers, both young and old, near and far (many by email), are included in the book. Here are a few examples: I remember coming here on bike at age nine to get the Boston Globe for my aunt and parents. I remember buying my mother a necklace for Mother's Day when there was a jewelry counter. I remember riding my bike here to get my mother a spool of thread or a zipper when she was in the middle of a sewing project. If you need something, most likely you could find it at Lord's.
