On March 16, the Vine Lake Preservation Trust will present "Be Jubilant, My Feet" - a Concert to Recognize Medfield’s Civil War Veterans. The program will include songs from the era including The Battle Hymn of the Republic.

Witness the portrayal of Julia Ward Howe by a charming actress as she composes "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." "Be Jubilant, My Feet" is a free family concert to recognize 75 Civil War veterans buried or honored in Medfield’s Vine Lake Cemetery. It will be held Sat., March 16, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Church of the Advent, 28 Pleasant Street, Medfield. The Medfield Historical Society Civil War program on Monday, Nov. 7 will look at the home front of Medfield, following a proud send off of 82 local boys who marched off to war 150 ago. Town Historian and Historical Society curator, Richard DeSorgher, with help from area Civil War experts, will transport us in time to Medfield in the 1860s. At 7:30 p.m. at the historic “Meeting House,” First Parish Unitarian Church, members and guests will feel what it was like living in Medfield during that tragic but exciting period. The Medfield Historical Society presented "The Medfield Men Who Gave Lives During the Civil War" Monday night at the First Parish Unitarian Church on North Street.
The basement of the First Parish Church was full Monday night as the Medfield Historical Society presented “The Medfield Men Who Gave Lives During the Civil War (1861-1865).” Twelve Medfield soldiers died during that war with many of the names – Frank Chenery, James Chenery, John Chenery, Richard Derby, Joseph Hardy, Allan Kingsbury – recognizable today. The bodies of seven soldiers were never returned to Medfield. One hundred and fifty years earlier, Medfield residents gathered in the same spot for a town meeting after being asked by the Recruiting Committee to “bravely do your part in striking down the Rebbellion [sic], which for the sole purpose of perpetuating slavery, seeks to destroy this blessed Union and all our Free Institutions, …

On Monday, Oct. 3, Richard DeSorgher will present a Medfield Historical Society program about the 12 men from Medfield who were killed in the Civil War. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the basement of the old meetinghouse, the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church, 26 North St. Town Historian and Historical Society curator, Richard DeSorgher, will bring to life each of the soldier’s stories, taking us into battle, into the notorious Libby Prison in Richmond, and into the swamps of Carollton, Louisiana. The bodies of seven of those soldiers were never returned to their hometown, but instead lie today in unmarked graves scattered throughout the South.
