Crime in Medfield: The 1940's of the Town's Police Logs

This is the second of a two-part series as Town Historian Richard DeSorgher shares the history of the Medfield Police Log.

Over the years, the Medfield Police Log has recorded illegal activity from murders, theft, car accidents, rapes, breaking and entering, patient escapes from the state hospital to a hysterical mother calling 911 to report her house was being shot at, only to find out it was a woodpecker on her roof. The following is the second in the two-part series that looks at illegal activities recorded in the town of Medfield from the late 1800’s to the first half of the 20th century. This week’s article looks in-depth at the Medfield Police Log in the decade of the 1940’s. Monday, July 18: 9:58 a.m.  – A home health aid called from South Street for an ambulance for a  91-year-old woman with a possible stroke. Patient transported to Norwood Hospital. 10:57 a.m. – Caller reported a dead animal in the road near his house on Pound Street. Desk officer Animal Control officer Jennifer Shaw, who handled the situation. 11:32 a.m. – Animal Control officer Jennifer Shaw reported she was enroute to Harding Street near Longmeadow Road for a loose German Sheperd. Monday, June 20: 6:06 a.m. – 911 caller reported she would like an ambulance for her mother who was 80-year-old and was on the floor and she was breathing. Patient transported to Glover Hospital.  9:30 a.m. - Detective John Geary spoke with Joseph Visser, who stated to Detective Geary that his son, Rory Visser has returned home OK. It was sent out and missing persons was cancelled for Rory.  9:46 a.m. - Woman from John Crowder Road called from her cell phone to request police for a disturbance at her house. Thursday, June 2: 2:44 p.m. – Caller reported a motor vehicle accident near Citizen’s Bank on Main Street with no personal injury. Sergeant John Mayer responded. 3:52 p.m. – Individual came in the station to speak to officer Robert Flaherty in regard to an item he bought from Craigslist. 3:54 p.m. – Caller reported a tree was on fire and still smoldering at the Medfield State Hospital site. Thursday, May 12: 6:58 a.m. – Dover Police reported a bright blue or torques Honda with a heavy-set male subject followed a female walker around and to her house. No plate was given. 9:25 a.m. – Subject into the station from the AG’s office about a subject at Carmen Circle. She would like an officer to assist her with speaking to this subject about the case. Friday April 29: 6:09 p.m. – Woman from Cedar Lane walked into police station to inquire about a possible stalking involving herself. 7:37 p.m. – Caller reported a puppy running on Main Street.
