School Committee hears proposal to name MHS auditorium after Lowell Mason.
Members of The Lowell Mason Foundation spoke at the Medfield School Committee's regular meeting on Jan. 10 about naming the High School's auditorium in honor of the nationally recognized music educator, Lowell Mason. Foundation member Cheryl O’Malley proposed the idea to the School Committee. Mason, a native of Medfield, composed more than 1,600 hymns. At age 17, Mason was named the Choir Director of the First Parish Church in Medfield. He is most well known for his songs “Mary Had a Little Lamb” and “Joy to the World.” In 1832, Mason founded the Boston Academy of Music, while he was the Music Superintendent of the Boston School System. MHS jazz choir, ensembles 'wow' crowd at Tuesday's Jazz Winterfest Concert.
"Jazz speaks for life." These were the words Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. used to describe the complex, urban music during his 1964 opening address to the Berlin Jazz Festival. This address was found inside the MHS Jazz Winterfest Concert program and served as an educational piece to gain understanding and perspective about the music genre featured Tuesday – jazz. But the music truly came to life when the students took the stage, picked up their instruments and began to play or sing.
