This is part 10 of an 11-part series that takes an in-depth look at Medfield High School’s 2010-2011 academic year; goals for 2011-12 academic year; new curriculum offered in the fall; a pilot program; student life and the transition to a new principal.
Editor's Note: Medfield Patch will take an individual look at each theme in Judy Noble’s end of year report at the high school and will also take an in-depth look at goals for the 2011-12 academic year, new curriculum being offered in the fall, an advisor-advisee pilot program taking place, student life and community involvement and the transition from Noble to Robert Parga as Medfield High School principal. This is part 10 of our 11-part Medfield High School series. Town's snow budget continues to take a hit this winter.
This has been a winter for the record books as 72.15 inches of snow has fallen on Medfield this season, according to Medfield Weather. February's first storm hit Medfield for 9.75 inches and brought a messy wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain, causing dangerous travel conditions. There have been nine snow days in 2011 with another storm possibly hitting the area on Saturday and another early next week, according to the National Weather Service. This winter season has provided many around town with plenty of headaches and sore muscles from shoveling, but it has also been a season full of frustration for the Department of Public Works and the town administration handling the snow budget in a recession. "This is going to be a …

MHS coaches and teams have overcome winter's adversity of lost practices and constant scheduling changes.
The Medfield High School athletic department and its winter varsity programs have been dealt plenty of adversity this season from Mother Nature. The constant changes to game schedule and the lost practices due to snow days have made for a frustrating season for many coaches at Medfield High this winter. That's not to say their sports programs have had frustrating seasons, far from it in fact. The majority of MHS teams are in contention for postseason play – a result of overcoming this winter's challenges on and off the court, rink or track. "This winter has been really tough," said Medfield High School Athletic Director Jon Kirby. "You expect to deal with this in the spring with cancelled baseball, softball and tennis games. Winter is …

Warriors boys' basketball pulls away from Mohawks with fourth quarter run Friday.
MILLIS - There was one notable difference between the Medfield and Millis High School boys' basketball teams Friday night: size. The Warriors (5-3) had forwards Drew Shea and Tommy Conlon towering over Mohawk defenders all night, scoring 42 of the team's 71 points enroute to a 71-60 victory over Millis (2-6). "He [Shea] and Tom Conlon were really the difference tonight for us," said Medfield High School head coach Herb Grace. "Rebounding the ball and finishing underneath." Shea, a freshman starter, took advantage of his size and had a tremendous first half, carrying the Warriors' offense throughout the first 16 minutes, finding a home in the paint and going to work against smaller Mohawks' defenders. “He [Shea] had a huge first half," …

Warriors run winning streak to eight games, beat another Tri-Valley League opponent.
It was closer than the score indicates, but the final result is exactly what the Medfield High School girls' basketball team was playing for Tuesday night. The Warriors improved to 8-0 (7-0 in the Tri-Valley League) after defeating TVL foe Ashland (5-3), 47-32, Tuesday in the MHS gym. "This was a tough test for us tonight," said Medfield head coach Mark Nickerson. "Ashland is an extremely talented team. They have post players who play very physical and they have guards that can shoot, penetrate and play great defense." Ashland took a 11-9 first quarter lead but Medfield responded with an 11-8 run in the second quarter to go to the break ahead 20-19. "In the first half, we played very sloppy, committing 15 turnovers," said Nickerson. …
