The Medfield Fire Department and the American Red Cross held its 8th annual blood drive last week.
When firefighter Joe Brienze was about 10 years old, he needed a blood transfusion. "I hemorraged when I got my tonsils out because the stitches came out too early," he said after Thursday's blood drive sponsored by the Medfield Fire Department and the American Red Cross. "I'm donating [blood] because someone helped me at the time and I know it means a lot to Bill because someone helped his wife when she had a baby," Brienze said. "Bill" is fellow firefighter Bill DeKing who started the now-annual blood drive eight years ago, just months after his wife needed a blood transfusion after childbirth. More than 70 percent of all pool injuries occur in backyard pools, including in-ground, above-ground and portable pools.
More than 60 percent of all pool-related deaths and injuries occur in pools owned by the victim’s family or friends, according to federal statistics. That’s why Amica Insurance is sharing some important safety tips and reminders for pool owners this summer. Each year, nearly 400 children drown in pools and spas, and more than 5,000 others are treated for pool-related injuries, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. People who own pools need to be especially cautious because more than 70 percent of all pool injuries occur in backyard pools, including in-ground, above-ground and portable pools. On a warm Patriots' Day, Medfield residents lined up to give the gift of life. Blue Moon Bagel Cafe owners Dan and Linda Friedman teamed with the Red Cross and the Medfield Lions Club to host a Red Cross Blood Drive, which netted 25 units of blood. Medfield Lion Tom Sweeney said "Dan and Linda have graciously worked with the Lions on several other charitable events at the 'Moon,' including a fall clothing drive in support of local shelters.” In true “Moon” spirit, Dan Friedman was first in line to donate blood and Linda presented each donor with a gift certificate. The Medfield Fire Department and the American Red Cross are teaming up to host a blood drive on Wednesday, Sept. 7, from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Medfield Senior Center, One Ice House Rd. in Medfield. All presenting donors will receive a coupon for half off a one-day pass to Six Flags New England and they will also receive a coupon for a $12.99 oil change and free tire rotation, redeemable at any Monro Muffler/Brake location, or a coupon for $30 off any set of four tires, redeemable at any Tire Warehouse location.
