This Week is National EMS Week (May 19-25)

What would you say to local, state and national Emergency Medical Service personnel?

This week -- May 19 to 25 -- is National EMS Week and the theme is "EMS: One Mission. One Team." In 1968, President Gerald Ford signed the first EMS Week proclamation, designating a time for the nation to celebrate the emergency medical technician paramedic as well as an opportunity to educate the public about the critical role of EMS in the community, according to EMS.gov.  May 22 has been designated as Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) Day, according to emsweekideas.org.  Every day our local, state and national EMS respond to crisis situations. Recently, Boston's EMS was in the spotlight because of last month's bombings; and today, Emergency Medical Service personnel in Moore, Oklahoma, are in the national spotlight as …

Turtle, Absentee Juror Prompt Police Action

Additionally, one town gave us plenty of fodder for what could have been an entire unusual police news column.

If he had just gone to court the first time, this wouldn't have happened. A Fitchburg man found himself on the wrong side of the bar in Westborough District Court this week when he was arrested for failing to appear for jury duty. When police pulled him over for failing to stop/yield, they found that he was wanted for skipping out on jury duty. No doubt his trip to court as a defendant will be less pleasant—and more expensive—than if he had simply shown up for jury duty. Why did the turtle cross the road? In Shrewsbury, he crossed the road because if he had stayed in the middle of it, he would have continued to block traffic. Shrewsbury police recently were called to Grafton Street to remove the turtle from the road, as cars were backing …

Have There Been Any Other Break-Ins in Town?

Police say to hide your gold.

After a reported break-in of a commercial building last week where $2,800 in cash was stolen, it begged the question: Have there been any other break-ins lately?  Patch called on Medfield Chief of Police Robert Meaney Jr. for more information. Meaney said there have not been many break-ins as of late, however, there was a questionable call on the same day (May 10) to a hair salon on Green Street which reported damage to its front door. That could be related to the West Street break-in or could just be a broken window; that is under investigation. But what Meaney also said is that neighboring Norfolk has had some trouble lately. Norfolk has had several breaks where the individuals are looking for gold. They remove the gold from the house …
