Labor Day Traffic Will Be Heavy

Traffic will be heavy on all major roadways. Expect heavy delays while traveling on Friday and Monday.

This traffic warning was issued by the Department of Transportation.

MassDOT encourages motorists to plan ahead for safe travel during the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend.

Heaviest Labor Day traffic on the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) is expected on Thursday and Friday westbound and Monday afternoon-evening eastbound.

The Friday before Labor Day 2012 was the 10th busiest day on the Western Turnpike; commuters logged 350,531 transactions between Weston and the New York border.

Motorists should also anticipate holiday weekend congestion to and from Cape Cod and points north.

“Safety should be part of all travelers plans this upcoming weekend,” said MassDOT Highway Administrator Frank DePaola. “MassDOT reminds drivers to always designate a sober driver and to limit distractions behind the wheel to increase safety for all roadway users.”

To accommodate travel, MassDOT is suspending all road and bridge construction on major roadways from noon on Friday through start of normal business on Tuesday.

We invite you to check MassDOT statewide live traffic cameras before you travel and to consider downloading the free Ride Wise Smartphone application that provides users access to the real time traffic information on Interstate 93, sections of the Massachusetts Turnpike, Route 3 on the South Shore and Route 6/Mid-Cape Highway. RideWise is now available on all major platforms - iPhone, Android, and Windows Phone.

Free coffee will be served at the 18 service plazas along I-90 and other major state highways on Monday night, September 2, from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.

To save time, money and gas, please join E-ZPass to avoid waiting in line at cash toll booths.
