Labor Day Traffic Will Be Heavy
Traffic will be heavy on all major roadways. Expect heavy delays while traveling on Friday and Monday.
This traffic warning was issued by the Department of Transportation.
MassDOT encourages motorists to plan ahead for safe travel during the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend.
Heaviest Labor Day traffic on the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) is expected on Thursday and Friday westbound and Monday afternoon-evening eastbound.
The Friday before Labor Day 2012 was the 10th busiest day on the Western Turnpike; commuters logged 350,531 transactions between Weston and the New York border.
Motorists should also anticipate holiday weekend congestion to and from Cape Cod and points north.
“Safety should be part of all travelers plans this upcoming weekend,” said MassDOT Highway Administrator Frank DePaola. “MassDOT reminds drivers to always designate a sober driver and to limit distractions behind the wheel to increase safety for all roadway users.”
To accommodate travel, MassDOT is suspending all road and bridge construction on major roadways from noon on Friday through start of normal business on Tuesday.

Free coffee will be served at the 18 service plazas along I-90 and other major state highways on Monday night, September 2, from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.

Take the Train to the Cape
The popular CapeFLYER weekend train service from Boston to Cape Cod will run a Saturday/Sunday schedule on Monday, September 2nd. Weekend train service from Boston to Cape Cod has also been extended through the Columbus Day holiday, Monday, October 14. Customers may buy tickets on-board the train or on their Smartphone via the MBTA’s “mTicket” mobile ticketing app for Commuter Rail. Customers are encouraged to buy their tickets in advance. The MBTA service schedule for Labor Day, Monday, September 2, follows: All subway trains, streetcars, buses, trackless trolleys, and commuter rail trains will run on a Sunday schedule. Hingham boat service will not operate.
