Local Shop Owner Raises $2,500 at Kids Cancer Buzz Off Event

Maria Piedra, owner of The Butterfly Tree Store on Main Street had her hair buzzed at Gillette Stadium last week, raising funds for Kids Cancer.

Last Sunday many people were attending graduation ceremonies, but local shop owner, Maria Piedra was at Gillette Stadium getting her hair buzzed as part of The Kids Cancer Buzz Off fundraiser.

Piedra, a cancer survivor, raised $2,500 and was one of 400 people that got their heads buzzed. Each "buzzee" was allowed to bring two guests to this event and Piedra's husband and mom attended.

2012 marked the third year of this event. Only 25 people had their heads shaved the first year raising $25,000; approximately 150 people participated the second year raising $150,000; and 400 people raised approximately $500,000 this year.

"I was nervous, but once I got it buzzed, I thought what was the big deal?  If I could bring in this kind of money just for shaving my head, I'd do it again," said Piedra.

Sporting her newly buzzed head, Piedra had her photograph taken with official spokesperson and New England Patriots All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski.
