PHOTOS: Scenes from a Successful 2012 Relay For Life event

Check out these photos from the 10th annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life event held at the Medway Middle School last weekend.

MEDWAY – The weather was great, the event was fun, and the fundraising went on through the night – The Relay for Life of Medfield/Millis/Medway/Norfolk was a huge success.

Those in purple shirts represent being cancer survivors and each year the survivors are honored by taking the very first lap around the track and then invited into a dinner reception and this year was no exception.

In addition to walking the first lap, however, this year, each survivor was given a balloon and they were asked to let it go just before walking that first lap ... letting go of the balloon signified letting go of cancer.

Many youth and adult teams of volunteers set up camp, and walked the track throughout the night. Many of them also fundraised in unique ways. Girls of all ages got their haircut and donated it; one girl in particular had a huge group of friends watch and cheer her on as her hair became about a foot shorter within minutes. There were pie tossing contests and there was a "Miss Relay" contest. Teenage boys dressed up (in dresses) and walked a lap collecting donations.  The one with the most money became "Miss Relay."

The Luminaria ceremony was the most solemn part of the event, as the sky turned dark the lighted luminaria bags lit the track, each bag representing a loved one ... either a cancer survivor, someone currently battling cancer or someone lost to cancer.

Donations will continue to be accepted through August. To donate or for more information log onto www.relayforlife.org/3mnma or www.cancer.org

It was truly a wonderful event, a fun night for all, but most importantly, all proceeds raised to benefit the American Cancer Society.
