Pet of the Week: Meet 'Cocoa'

Cocoa is currently available for adoption at the Medfield Animal Shelter.

This sweet and very pretty tortoiseshell kitty is Cocoa and she is currently available for adoption at the Medfield Animal Shelter.

She is 11 months old and is playful and very affectionate, according to Kim Agricola of the Medfield Animal Shelter.

"She was brought to a local animal hospital by her owners to be euthanized because they said she does not always use her litter box to urinate," said Agricola. "The home she came from had four adult cats that were not spayed or neutered. The vet explained that cats may not use the box for many reasons; not enough boxes, the boxes may not be kept clean enough, another cat may be preventing her from using a box, the location of the box may be too dark or too noisy or the stress level in the home may be very high because the animals are not spayed or neutered."

Agricola noted this problem can often be easily solved if owners take the time to go through a check list of possible reasons and added many cats dislike a certain brand of litter that is too perfumed or they prefer an open box to a covered box. Sometimes, they just want their owner to clean the litter box more frequently since cats are very clean animals.

"In the two weeks Cocoa has been with us, she has used her litter box each and every time, even after we moved her to a room shared by several other cats," Agricola said. "She is now spayed and ready for a home.  To make the best life for her, we would like to place her as an only cat in case she did not like the cats in her home or prefers not to share her litter box."
