Medfield Girl Scouts Stock Up on Library Fun

Editor's note: The following press release was submitted for publication by Lisa Predella, publicity contact for the Medfield Girl Scouts.

Remembering how the children’s play area made them learn to love going to the Medfield Public Library, five Medfield Girl Scouts recently replenished the library’s supply of toys, games and crafts, to earn their Bronze Award – the highest honor a junior Girl Scout can achieve.

Late last month, fifth grade juniors, Molly Drumm, Maggie Long, Breanna Morgan, Isabelle Melia and Morgan Caro delivered four cartons of toys and puppets along with several bags of brand new puzzles, trains, games and craft supplies to a delighted Ann Russo, the Medfield children’s librarian.

“The play corner is a popular area and [the girls] have refreshed it so the children of Medfield can feel even more welcome in the library,” Russo said.

The girls chose to focus on the library’s play area after meeting with Russo and learning that the trains were dwindling, the puppets were worn and there was a shortage of play kitchen supplies and age-appropriate games and puzzles. After working with Russo to create a children’s room “wish list,” the girls held a toy drive in January, asking Medfield residents to drop off donations in boxes they placed at the elementary schools and Park Street Books. Among the many items donated was a relatively new train table, which has been put to very good use at the library.

The girls also held a bake sale fundraiser at the Boy Scout Pinewood Derby on Jan. 28th, and used these proceeds as well as their share of Girl Scout cookie sale proceeds to buy new toys and games for the library.

“The girls’ enthusiasm and drive through every part of this project never waivered – from brainstorming ideas, to encouraging the Boy Scouts to buy their baked goods. It was wonderful to see them grow and get as much out of the project as they put into it,” said adult volunteer guide, Lisa Predella.
