Medfield Girl Scouts Helping Soldiers Phone Home

Editor's note: The following press release was submitted by Lisa Predella, publicity contact of the Medfield Girl Scouts.

Medfield Girl Scout Troop 74891 has partnered with non-profit Cell Phones for Soldiers Inc. to provide troops overseas with cell phones so they can call home and stay connected with loved ones.

These fifth grade girl scouts, who are working to earn their Bronze Award, ask Medfield residents to support their cause. Please donate gently-used cell phones and/or chargers to Cell Phones for Soldiers by dropping them at the following locations starting Sunday, April 1:

  • , 26 Park St., Medfield
  • (in the Narthex), 496 Mail St., Medfield

The girls consider this cause a win for all, since it involves recycling old cell phones, which reduces the impact on landfills and gives soldiers precious moments talking to their families. The girls started their project at school and have already collected 43 phones, with a goal to collect 100 in all.

“Each year we have been humbled by the amount of people and organizations like the Girl Scouts that take the initiative to support our troops,” said Cell Phones for Soldiers co-founder, Brittany Bergquist. “We have also watched the communication gap between our armed forces and their loved ones continue to grow as more troops are deployed for their third or fourth tour overseas.”

Donated phones are sent to Michigan-based ReCellular for recycling. For every donated phone valued at just $5, Cell Phones for Soldiers is able to provide two and a half hours of free talk time to deployed troops.
