Medfield Boys' Hockey Delivers a Win for the Medfield Food Cupboard

After practice on Sunday, Feb. 20, the Medfield High School boys' hockey team stepped off the ice and headed to Roches Bros. Supermarket in Millis.

Despite being hungry after their morning workout, the Warriors were not there to shop. Instead, they were there to organize a food collection drive for the Medfield Food Cupboard.

Nineteen members of the Warriors' hockey team stood outside, despite cold temperatures from noon to 4 p.m., working shifts outside the supermarket.  Each player took his turn speaking to incoming customers, asking them if they were willing to purchase an item for the Food Cupboard.

The response was overwhelming.  In just four hours, the team had handed out almost 350 shopping lists and in turn received enough groceries to fill 12 shopping carts, as well as $100 in unsolicited cash donations.  It took six large-sized vehicles and 10 players to deliver the groceries to the Medfield Food Cupboard the next day.

“The response was incredible.  Almost every customer donated something,” said Mike Brown, senior and Warriors' co-captain.

Caren McElhenny of the Medfield Food Cupboard was on hand to receive delivery of the food collection.  She was ecstatic by the amount of food donated and believed it was the largest single food drive the Food Cupboard has had in recent history.

The boys' hockey team not only delivered the food, but stayed to help sort and store it as well.

“We practically filled all of the shelves at the food cupboard," said junior Nick Feinberg. "They were really happy with how much we were able to collect.”

Mary Norton, who helped organize the event, was proud of the efforts by the boys' hockey team.

“Taking part in this community service project proved to be a gratifying experience for these boys," Norton said. "It was not easy for them to ask strangers if they were willing to help, but they each stepped up to the challenge and were rewarded with incredible generosity.  This food drive will benefit many families and the boys are very proud of that.”

The Warriors team thanked Roche Bros. Supermarket of Millis for allowing them to organize this event at their store and to thank all of their customers who generously donated.
