Eagle Scout candidate reconditions Medfield fire hydrants in Pine Needle Park area

As you drive around the Pine Needle Park area of Medfield, you might notice that many of the fire hydrants stand out and shine like new.

Alex Carpino, Medfield High School senior and Eagle Scout candidate along with his team of helpers is responsible for these newly restored and reconditioned hydrants.  Carpino and friends spent the last two weekends reconditioning over 55 fire hydrants.

Carpino coordinated 15 adult and 20 youth volunteers to assist him with this project and his goal was to clean up and recondition 40 hydrants.  The team, however, exceeded that goal and completed 55 hydrants in the Pine Needle Park area on subdivision streets including Spruce Way, Maplewood Road, Cedar Lane, Winter Street, Tamarack Raod, Lantern Lane, Flintlocke Lane, Emerson Road, Erik Road, Morse Lane, Cypress Street, Newport Lane, Kenney Road, Summer Street, Johns Avenue and Lowell Mason Road. This task took approximately 125 man hours of work.

The project involved scraping loose paint and surface rust from the hydrants and then applying a new coat of red and silver paint on each hydrant.  Carpino was very thankful for the help he received from Mr. Ken Feeney, Superintendent of Public Works and Mr. Paul Hinkley from the Highway Department for their support, guidance and materials needed for this project.

One of the Eagle Scout requirements is to organize, lead and complete a project benefitting the community. "This project would not have been successful without the help of all my friends, family, fellow scouts and scout leaders who volunteered to help me with this project" said Carpino.
