Boy Scouts Old Colony Council Honors Shonda Schilling with Distinguished Citizen Award

Medfield resident was honored at the annual Old Colony Council event on Nov. 1 for her humanitarian and philanthropic work.

The Boy Scouts of America Old Colony Council honored Medfield resident Shonda Schilling at the annual Distinguished Citizens Award Dinner held at the Boston Marriott in Quincy on Nov. 1. 

Shonda is a noted humanitarian and New York Times Best Selling author. She is also the wife of former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling.

The annual event is the largest fundraiser for the Old Colony Council, which serves youth and families from 41 communities along the South Shore and Metro West areas of Southeastern Massachusetts. It was attended by nearly 200 community and business leaders who support the Boy Scouts and the values-based programs for boys and families

Shonda Schilling was honored with the Distinguished Citizens Award for her humanitarian and philanthropic work. Her work through her own organization – The Shade Foundation of America – as well as with the ALS Association, Aspergers Association of New England and Youth Care exemplify the Scout Oath to help other people at all times. 

During her keynote address, Schilling spoke of the positive effect the Boy Scouts have had on her own son and family and on the relevance of the Boy Scout’s core objectives: strengthening character, personal fitness and good citizenship.

Two outstanding youth members – Eagle Scout, Joshua Connors from Bridgewater and Venturer Kate Tatar from Norwood – also spoke at the event.

Past Distinguished Citizens Award honorees have included: Andrew H. Card, Jr., Christopher Oddleifson, Edward Santos, Arthur R. Connelly, Jack Conway, William Delahunt, Gerald Good, Robert Marini, Alan McKim, and Brian Tedeschi.
