Good point about Frank. I see where you're coming from and there is some validity to it. If you're going to pretend to be a cowboy, at least learn to saddle a horse right? My old man volunteered for the Marines and went to Korea and got mortared for his efforts (he survived in one piece...physically at least) and he was also a John Wayne fan. So I guess Wayne's faux "hero" status comes more from the myth than the man. That is nothing new in the world. But I do see your points. (Pretty amazing that Jane Fonda was of the same blood as Henry).

Mel, I'm not accustomed to defending rightwing viewpoints, but in this case I have to inform you that Roosevelt's govt didn't want John Wayne to enlist. Wayne was much more valuable to the war effort staying in Hollywood and making his pro-war propaganda films. However, that is not to say he would have enlisted if the military had not discouraged him.
