A Resident's Guide to Medfield's Memorial Day 2012

Medfield's Memorial Day parade will begin Monday, May 28th at 9:45 a.m. on Janes Avenue. There will be a ceremony at Baxter Park at 10 a.m.

It is often a weekend associated with cookouts and the unofficial beginning of summer, but Memorial Day is truly a day to remember the military veterans who died in service – sacrificing their lives for our country's freedom.

"Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service," said USMC Lt. Col. Todd M. Caruso, a Medfield native who will be giving the Memorial Day address at this year's ceremony. "We are a grateful nation to these heroes. It is important to not forget about them as we enjoy our freedom to gather to enjoy the get-togethers with our family and friends."

Medfield will pay tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and our country on Monday, May 28th with the town's annual Memorial Day Parade, which begins at 9:45 a.m. behind Town Hall on Janes Avenue.

More About Memorial Day

According to http://www.usmemorialday.org, Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873 and by 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war. It is now celebrated in almost every state on the last Monday in May.
