VIDEO: Defense Sparks 'Team Win' as Medfield Beats Holliston, 54-32

The girls' basketball team is closing in on a fourth straight Tri-Valley League title.

The Warriors (16-0, 14-0) defeated TVL foe Holliston, 54-32 Friday, putting the team one win away from earning a share of the 2011-2012 TVL title. Medfield can clinch that share of the league title Tuesday in Westwood when the Warriors take the court against the Wolverines at 5 p.m. Medfield defeated Westwood, 66-29 on Jan. 6.

"It'd be nice to win it against [Westwood] after all the league title they've won, it'd be nice to clinch it at their place," said Medfield head coach Mark Nickerson.

On Friday, Medfield played tough defense in the half-court and made enough plays on offense to build a comfortable first half lead and sustain the advantage through the final 16 minutes. 

"I thought our half-court defense was good," Nickerson said. "I was pleased with our full-court pressure early on too. We caused a lot of havoc and turnovers."

Lauren Petit led Medfield with 11 points and added three assists. Delaney Lawson had nine points to go with five rebounds, Payton Ouimette and Jen Narlee both had four points and nine rebounds apiece. Ali Mileszko netted eight points and Kristin Fechtelkotter had seven. The Warriors led 13-6 after the first quarter, 32-12 at halftime and 46-27 after 24 minutes.

Medfield captain Ali Gold missed her second straight game with the flu.

"Never good not to have one of your captains there but I know she was with us in spirit and hopefully she'll be back soon," Nickerson said.

Playing for a Cause

The Warriors wore pink jerseys Friday for those who are battling or who have battled cancer.

"I'm sure it's a personal thing for a lot of people, it's a personal thing for me as well," Nickerson said. "This is an important week for all of us. Basketball is a big part of our lives but family, friends and all of that is much more important. This is time we can think about and remember some of those people that we've loved and have suffered from that disease."
