Roddy Dominant as Medfield Advances in State Tourney with Another Shootout Win

Medfield High School boys' hockey goaltender Conor Roddy stopped 40 shots and Robert Treiber netted the game winner in the sixth round of a shootout to beat Scituate, 1-0 in Sunday's MIAA Division 3 South Sectional quarterfinal game.

BOURNE – It was Déjà vu for the Medfield High School boys' hockey team Sunday as the Warriors advanced in the MIAA Division 3 South Sectional state tournament with its second consecutive shootout victory – a 1-0 victory over (8) Scituate.

Medfield defeated Tri-Valley League rival, .

On Sunday, there were times during the second period where it seemed that Scituate was only a few shots away from going up big against the (1) Medfield Warriors. Getting 20 shots on goal in the second frame alone, the Sailors were controlling the flow of the game, yielding very few turnovers to Medfield.

Yet for every puck thrown on net was a save by Medfield’s Conor Roddy (40 saves) to keep the Warriors in the game.

“We were lucky, it could of been 2-0,” Medfield head coach Toby Carlow said. “He (Roddy) played out of his mind and sometimes in the playoffs when the team is not playing as sharp as they should, he’s gotta be the one to do it and give you that chance.”

With no score after three periods, it took a shootout goal by Robert Treiber in the sixth round for Medfield to beat Scituate at Gallo Arena in Bourne and advance the Warriors into the semifinal round of the MIAA Division 3 South Sectional boys' hockey state tournament.

Opportunities to score came often but were always denied for Scituate. Dan DelGrosso had a chance to give the Sailors a lead early in the first period but a spectacular glove save by Roddy maintained a scoreless game at 4:59.

Medfield’s best chance in the first period came at 9:37 when John Buchanan’s glove side shot from the top of the left faceoff circle was denied by Scituate netminder Mike Soucey.

The talents of Roddy were on display during the second period when the Sailors threw everything they could at the Medfield goalie. With only six shots for the Warriors in the second, Roddy spent most of the period trying to swat pucks away from the net.

“I had no emotion that period. I had to come up big,” Roddy said.

The Sailors thought they scored less than 90 seconds into the third off a shot from Tucker Ciessau near the blue line but Scituate was called for offsides much to the chagrin of the Scituate faithful in the crowd.

The rest of the third period saw a more even game with no goals. Patrick Lawler’s feed to Chris Diana in front of the net was the Warriors’ best chance of the game but Soucey was able to push the puck away from the net.

Scoreless after regulation, the winner would be decided in either a 12-minute sudden death overtime period or a shootout. Buchanan almost scored on a near breakaway at 5:15 of the extra period while Cam Donnelly had no luck near the goal at the midway point. With 20 seconds left in overtime, Tyler Etzkron had a chance to win the game but he slightly missed the net  – all but guaranteeing that the Warriors’ would have to partake in a best of five shootout for the second tournament game in a row.

Through the first five rounds, both Soucey and Roddy did their part to maintain a scoreless shootout. Going into the bottom of the sixth round, Treiber had a chance to win the game for the Warriors and keep their season alive.

“He asked me before hand what he should do and I said do whatever you feel comfortable doing,” Carlow said.

It might of taken regulation, overtime, and a shootout plus an extra round but Treiber was able to finally break the deadlock with a goal to send the Warriors to their second semi-final game in as many seasons.

The win improves Medfield’s record to 18-3-1. The Warriors return to the ice for their semi-final matchup against Rockland on Wednesday. The venue and time are to be announced.
