PHOTOS: Medfield Dominant in First Round Win to Advance in D2 South Tourney

Medfield cruised past Hull in the first round of the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional girls' lacrosse tournament with a 19-5 victory. The Warriors will play in Friday's quarterfinal round against familiar foe Norwell.

The girls' lacrosse team did exactly what they wanted to against visiting Hull in the first round of the MIAA D2 South Sectional state tournament – start fast.

The Warriors scored seemingly at will in the early going, rattling off nine straight goals in a 12-minute span, before Hull got on the board with 12:39 to play in the first half.

"We came out really hard, really fast," said Medfield head coach Jason Heim. "We didn’t care who our opponent was; we didn’t want to underestimate Hull. We tried to put the game away as quickly as we can."

Even after allowing Hull's first goal, Medfield continued to pressure and attack the Pirates' defense and responded to Hull's score just 16 seconds after it was tallied when Alex McDevitt found the back of the net.

The Warriors closed out the first half with a 13-2 lead and outscored the Pirates, 6-3 in the final 25 minutes to win handedly, 19-5. Heim was pleased with the effort because it allowed him to empty his bench and rest his starters.

"We are still fighting a couple of injuries here and there so it was nice to be able to get the starters off the field and get some younger players some action," Heim said.

Medfield's Katelyn Nochese led the Warriors' offense with five goals and McDevitt added four. Tri-captain Emily Zlevor netted three goals.

"Katelyn has been a huge asset for us this year," Heim said. ... "She’s been awesome, she’s a special player and a super athlete. ... You look at our game and people have tried to face guard one or two of our players and that’s fine because there’s so many weapons. That’s the way we’ve been."

Next up, Medfield will face a familiar foe, fifth ranked Norwell in the MIAA D2 South Sectional quarterfinals Friday at Medfield High School. Time of the game is to be determined.

Norwell has ended Medfield's season in the state tournament four times since 2006, . Heim said his team will be up for the challenge.

"We are looking forward to Norwell," Heim said. ... "We’ve got to play the best to be the best. ... I always say to all my teams only one team goes home without crying so there’s only one state champ. It’s going to be fun and an exciting game. Hopefully we can get all the Medfield fans, kids and parents to come and root us on."
