Medfield Spoils Norton Girls Basketball Opener

The Warriors get 4 scores in double digits and Meghan Brown scores a game high 17 for the Lancers.

As successful as the game was for the Medfield Warriors, it was just as frustrating for the Norton Lancers. After keeping the score to within 3 almost midway though the second quarter, the Lancers fell apart as the Warriors beat the Lancers 68-20 in the first game of the season.

Early signs in the first quarter indicated a defensive struggle, as both teams were hurting for points. With both teams tightening up on defense, it was going to take an extra strong offensive effort to win the game, and Medfield couldn’t get it early on.

“That first quarter obviously a little frustrating for us. We need to play a lot better than that. We had looks that we should have been making that we weren't making,” said Medfield head coach Mark Nickerson.

Leading 9-6 going into the second quarter, the Warriors' defense stepped it up and denied the Lancers any points until late in the third quarter.

Outscoring the Lancers 22-0 in the second quarter, the Warriors pressured the Lancers offense to force turnovers and get quick points under the basket.

“The turnovers killed us. Their press is really strong and we couldn’t break it,” said Norton head coach Nicole Nunes.

It wasn’t any better under the basket as the Warriors had no problem getting second and third attempt baskets.

“We had a big size advantage so that was a big thing to take advantage of,” said Nickerson.

Despite getting some 3-pointers down the stretch, the Lancers couldn’t find a way back as the Warriors took away the opening game of the season.

Lauren Petit and Jen Narlee both led the way with 12 points. Delaney Lawson wasn’t far behind with 11 points. Payton Ouimette had 10 points.

“We had a lot of players scoring. I think we’re going to be a tough team to defend against because you can’t concentrate on one player,” said Nickerson.

The star of the night for the Lancers had to be senior captain Meghan Brown. The forward was responsible for 17 of the Lancers’ 20 points.

“We’re counting on her to step up like that the whole season,” said Nunes.

The loss puts Norton at 0-1 after one game while the Warriors are 1-0

On Dec. 16 the Warriors will travel to Hopkinton for a 5 p.m. tip off while the Lancers will be at Dover-Sherborn with a 6:30 p.m. tip off.
