Medfield Softball Suffers 9-1 Setback vs. Hopkinton

One big inning plagues Warriors in TVL loss; Girls' tennis wins season opener.

A day after earning its first win of the season, the young Medfield High School softball team faced a difficult challenge in an experienced and talented Hopkinton team.

The result was a 9-1 Hillers' victory Friday at Shonda Schilling Field, but the game was much closer than the score dictates.

"We hung with them for five innings," said Warriors' head coach Sue Pratt. "We were down  3-0 and they had one big inning and that’s what did us in."

That inning came in the fifth when the flood gates opened and Hopkinton scored five runs in the frame to lead 8-0.

"[Hopkinton] is a very good team," Pratt said. "They won the [TVL] last year and they went deep into the tournament."

Despite the eight-run loss, there were plenty of positives to be taken from Pratt's young squad against a veteran team.

"I thought Julia Biedrzycki had a banner day," Pratt said. "She hit and she pitched. She was a pitcher [Friday], she just didn't throw, she did a nice job of pitching."

Pratt also noted she found a part of her batting order that worked well.

"We're just trying to find a combo that we have kids with good on-base percentages followed by kids who can hit," Pratt said. "We hit some line drives today but we just happen to be hitting them at people."

Medfield will travel to Dover-Sherborn Monday for a 3:45 game against the Raiders.

"[D-S] is going to be much improved," said Pratt. "We’re going to have to play as well as we did [Friday] and we are going to have to do some major hitting again. I think if anything our offense [is an issue]. We’ve got to get some people confident at the plate. That comes with young players."

Girls' Tennis Wins Opener

The Medfield High School girls' tennis team opened its 2011 season with a 4-1 victory over Hopkinton Friday.

"All the girls played with poise," said Warriors' head coach Chris DuBose. "It was a strong challenge for our first match, but we hung in there with a strong team."

In first singles, Medfield's Alex Freeman lost to defending Tri-Valley League champion, Denny LaMachia, 6-3, 6-2. The other four matches went to Medfield: Lexi Narsaway won her first varsity match with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Hopkinton's Emma McWilliams in second singles. Hannah Oliphant won in third singles with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Madie Schneider. In doubles, Julia Basiliere and Hunter Stahl beat Hopkinton's Bevy Reynolds and Abby Normandeau, 7-5, 6-2. In second doubles, Lauren Buscone and Megan Tschirch defeated Hopkinton's Jessie Hibel and Katy Cook, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

"Second doubles came back from losing their first set to win the next two sets," said DuBose.
