Medfield Makes History: Captures First Ever District 11 Williamsport Title

The Medfield 12A Williamsport team continued its historic run through the Little League Williamsport baseball tournament Saturday by capturing its first-ever District 11 title and advancing to this week's sectional tournament.

NORWOOD –The Medfield 12A Williamsport baseball team continued its historic run through the Little League tournament Saturday in dramatic fashion, walking off with an 8-7 victory over Norfolk to capture the team's first ever District 11 title and advance to the sectional round.

Medfield found itself in unchartered territory Saturday, playing in its first-ever District 11 Finals against a Norfolk team that was also making its first ever appearance in the finals.

Medfield made history on Friday, July 15 when it beat Hopkinton, 4-2 to advance to the District 11 championship game. In Saturday's final at the Norwood Little League Fields, the Warriors trailed Norfolk, 7-4 heading into the fifth inning but a two-run home run from Matt Dold pulled Medfield within one, 7-6.

Not ready to see its historic tournament run come to an end, Medfield willed together an exciting bottom of the sixth that scored two runs to walk-off with the 8-7 victory. James Voss, Tim Difiore, Dan Chapski and Josh Petrucci all reached base in front of Chris McGrory, who roped a base hit over Norfolk's second baseman to score the game-tying and game-winning runs.

Max Karger and Petrucci pitched well against a strong hitting Norfolk team, according to Jerry Potts and "contributions were made by every player with a big hit by Jack Kornet, Gage Condon reaching base to score (hit by pitch, scored a run), and John Madej making strong defensive plays at first."

The Warriors dominated its Pool play, posting a 5-0 record in the Pool 2 standings and was the only unbeaten team in District 11. In the Pool 2 tournament, Medfield defeated Hopkinton, 12-7, Needham American, 4-2, Norwood American, 15-9, Sharon, 14-3 (five innings) and Walpole National, 7-2.

From there, Medfield advanced to the semifinal round of the District 11 tournament, knocking off Norwood American, 10-0 and Hopkinton, 4-2 to earn a spot in the finals against Norfolk. Now the team sets its sights on the sectional round of the tournament, which begins this week. Medfield is coached by Joe Petrucci, David McGrory and John Dold.
