WELLESLEY – The Medfield High School girls' lacrosse team made history Monday night after defeating Winchester, 10-9 to capture its first ever EMass Division 2 state championship. Medfield's Emily Zlevor led the offensive attack with five goals – three in the second half and Katelyn Noschese added three. Natalie Gill was strong on the draws and Sarah Honan was tough in net – two key components that usually result in success. Monday was no different. After trailing 2-1 early in the first half, Medfield responded with six of the next eight goals to close the first half with a 7-4 lead. Winchester stayed in it, making a run in the second half to tie the game at nine apiece with 4:27 remaining in regulation but Zlevor netted her fifth goal of the game less than a minute later to give Medfield the 10-9 lead. The Warriors stayed aggressive on the ball and effectively ran the clock down to zero with just under two minutes to play with long possessions to seal the program's first ever state championship. The Warriors' historic run through the Division 2 state tournament began with a 19-5 victory over Hull in the first round of the Division 2 South Sectional tournament. From there, Medfield rose above tremendous competition in the D2 South bracket, beating some of the best teams in the state – Norwell (14-10), Duxbury (6-5) and Hopkinton (9-8) before Monday's victory over D2 North champion Winchester. Medfield ends the 2012 season with an 18-5 record (9-3 in the Tri-Valley League) and as the best Division 2 girls' lacrosse team in the state. Editor's note: There's plenty more coverage from Monday's historic victory coming your way! Stay tuned later Monday night and Tuesday morning for video highlights and interviews and a photo gallery of Medfield's EMass D2 State Championship win as well as a story looking back at the Warriors' championship season.
