Medfield Girls' Lacrosse Rolls by D-S, 16-7 Friday

Warriors improve to 7-1 overall, 5-1 in the TVL this season.

The Medfield High School girls' lacrosse team continued its quick start to the season, knocking off rival Dover-Sherborn, 16-7 Friday night at D-S.

The Warriors (7-1, 5-1) jumped out to a 7-3 halftime lead but turned it up a notch coming out of the intermission, rattling off four straight goals in a less than three minute span - keeping possession away from the Raiders.

“[Medfield] had a lot of quick ball movement and it was taking us longer to recover from that than we were in the first half,” said D-S head coach Erin Newton.

“In those four goals, our communication was down, our slides were down, but, in their defense, we were trying a lot of different things on defense to see which combination would work the best and be the most efficient,” said Newton.

Medfield's smothering style of defense frustrated D-S ball handlers in the second half as two to three Warriors were always near a D-S player, collapsing on the ball. The result was D-S turnovers and the inability to get off clean passes.

“We’ve been working on that, especially in transition," said MHS head coach Jason Heim. "We make sure that everybody is involved in the transition defense, we don’t let any stand back and watch. Even our lowest attack player will be involved in the defense."

Medfield goalie Sarah Honan kept D-S from making a comeback in the second half with several key saves.

“She’s stone cold in there and she’s intimidating too," said Heim. "She’s got that presence in net and one good save like that, it can be a game changer in a lacrosse game. They had a good five or six shots where if they went in it would have been a one goal game.”

Medfield's Katie Ott scored a game-high eight goals. Ashley Stewart scored four goals for Dover-Sherborn.

The Raiders are now 6-3 on the season, while the Warriors improve to 7-1. Medfield takes the field Tuesday, May 3 at Bellingham at 3:45 p.m.
